would i just go down to hobby town and get some red transparent paint, and apply like it's Nite Shade? here's the idea go from this:

those are different tail lights..
and it wouldnt look right unless you sprayed the entire tail, aside from reverse portions id go with either new tails, if you like the ones you posted specifically, or a light tint to the current ones |

i've looked for hours for new tail lights... it's stock.
thats not my car either. if you look in my album mine's teal. i would nite shade them all the way but i would go completely black, not really sure if thats legal in nebraska those are different model's of the same car too... first 1 is a liftback like my car, and the 2nd is a coupe. just noticed they had different tail lights. |

Like with nite shades if you use Testors Candy Apple Red spray paint with several layers with a good sanding you can get a good red out... I did this to my Ex's saturn that had the yellow turn lens:

Sand them with 1500, then a final go of 2000, then buff and polish.
If you're really good with window tint you can tint them with red window tint. I titned my signals black with it, and the rear of my Alero red, too. |

Yea it's really simple, oddly I'd reapplied the red on the tails (the old clear was beguining to peal from lack of proper prep), so I sanded, sprayed the red, sanded again then added a second layer, sanded then did the nite shades in various coats, a light buff and then several clears.... The nite shades dissappeared after one summer in Arizona
but the red stayed strong ....

make sure you wet sand them....I agree use a very high grit paper so it will be very fine and not show as many scratches...
I recommend spraying them and clearing them at the same time, or take them to a shop and have them clear coat the lens when you are done... so steps: Wet sand (apply water to the lens and paper as you sand) Spray with light coats of your paint (2-4 coats) Spray clear coat with each coat (makes a glass finish vs bland) or; have them clear coated by a shop for $25-50 bucks re-install. Make sure to allow the coats to dry a little between each coat, but not fully. Make sure you wet sand between each coat as well, slightly, dont get carried away. |

DO NOT spray clear over VHT there's a bad chemical reaction and it will turn white /foggy looking ... Unsure if it's with any clear or just certain clears ...
I've seen it do it with rattlecan clear (Krylon maybe) And automotive clear |
