I'm using it for a fiber optic tube behind a tinted piece of plastic. The brightest i can find from a reputable source is from superbrightleds:

http://superbrightleds.com/specs/r3_specs.htm

12000 mcd
628nm wavelength
50 mA forward current
2.1v typ voltage
8 degrees viewing angle

anyone know of a brighter one?

Can find brighter on eBay, but than again - it's eBay.

I bought some around 15,000MCD at one point. Viewing was more than 8 degrees also.

Does it necessarily have to be 5mm? I'll mention 1Watt LEDs, but seeing the stuff you build, I'm sure thats passed through your head.

Btw: Last sentence didn't mean to sound rude, what so ever.

You have to take into account viewing angle as well. A 12,000MCD w/ a 8 degree viewing angle will appear MUCH brighter than a 12,000MCD w/ a 80 degree viewing angle. Technically it's the same amount of light out of each LED but one is more concentrated and that's why it appears brighter.

I would imagine that using a led with the smaller viewing angle is more what you are looking for no? As you are using it for the fiber optic? I will search around when I am bored tomorrow at work.

I'm looking for Red. The fiber optics i'm using is a 1/2" acrylic tube that will be used in my parking lights. The optic tubes are the same used in the 2008 Cadillac CTS parking lights. They are currently sized for 5mm LEDs so i'll try that option first, but I can easily retrofit them for superflux or even Chip style if i have to. Anything to get them brighter.

I have blackout-tinted tail lights so mine need to be brighter than normal. Best i can figure, The LEDs currently installed are 4000mcd 30deg 5mm LEDs I was pulled over twice tonight for not having bright enough tail lights. While they do technically meet the state's requirements fot parking lights, the blackout has a glossy finish that reflects ambiant lighting making it appear that i have No tail lights at all.

I've considered an LED strip but it looks somewhat dumb looking. I prefer the uniform glow of the acrylic tube compared to the spot glow of the LED strips.

Okay then, i'm sold. I bought a pack of 50 for a very reasonable price. According to the specs, i can use the same resistors i already have. icon_biggrin.gif
