So I'm working on a web-related blog design, and I implemented a neat trick to make the logo change color.

You can check it out here: http://www.heywemakestuff.com/dev/ Just resize your browser's width and watch the logo change colors.

This is an in-progress dev site for me, so it's not going to be done, so ignore the other stuff. Not compatible with IE6.

You can throw up a png fix and make it IE6 compatible. I tend to use this fix: http://www.twinhelix.com/test/

I like it. I'm using Chrome and it looks good. Although what is the point? People aren't going resize their browser window just to see the logo change color. Maybe if it automatically cycled through the colors? I know you said it's an in-progress dev site and it was a neat trick so I'll leave it at that. It is pretty cool.

Looks like it's only CSS, right? BTW, are you using a reset? I've been using Eric Meyer's on a few of my site's I've toyed around with.

Just CSS and transparent graphics.

I could, and might eventually, but the site is gonna be for designers. How many web junkies do you know still use IE6? lol

The point is it's just a neat trick. If people know it's there, they'll play around with it once or twice. Plus it's practice for me, portfolio fodder, etc.

I do use Eric Meyer's reset as well, usually tweaked a little bit to serve whatever needs the site has.

Sweet, I've never messed with css, I didn't realize you can do so much with it. (I did one site but didn't dig deep into it) Plus I'm not a web developer.

Bad form. How many designers do you know that use IE at all? You should always try to be cross browsers. Cross browser is really the only way to get respect from other developers.

Maybe if everyone stopped supporting IE6 people would finally upgrade their browser to a more superior browser, like Firefox. Hell, every time I logon to Hotmail it tells me my browser isn't compatible with Hotmail and suggests upgrading to, surprise, IE.

Just diagnosed the problem. My girlfriends computer is 800x600, my iMac's is 1680 x 1050.

It doesn't change color less than 800x600.

Yeah, because if the rainbow background gets smaller than the logo itself, it'll show through to the white background, and effectively make the logo disappear icon_smile.gif

The logo looks fine when I'm at 800x600.

I don't see what the first one proves. There are countless sites devoted to IE6 hacks. Everyone that works with websites knows that IE6 sucks, its the general masses that don't. I understand that your site is catered towards developers, but that doesn't mean you get to use bad practices. Are you going to throw usability/accessibility out the window too?

http://idroppedie6.com/ doesn't list a single major site. I just checked my analytics, and we had over 200 orders from IE6 alone...

Don't be lazy. Apply the png fix and be done with it.

The point is, designers and developers don't use IE6, don't like IE6, and a lot of them don't cater to IE6 anymore.I never said I dropped support of it, nor did I say I was going to throw usability and standards out of the window.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree because I don't know of any respectable designers that won't cater towards the what is probably the 3rd or 4th most popular browser in the world.

I don't have any bagels, but now I wish I did.

P.S. Designers and developers don't use IE6? What clientele do you think uses w3schools? http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

Brandon, obviously any web business person selling a service to anyone who wants a website is going to make sure that it works in IE6 - at least people that aren't stupid.

And also, I'm making blanket statements based on personal experiences and what I see other designers talk about. Go ahead - send a mass email to 1,000 modern designers and developers, and ask them what browser they use, and if they like IE6. I think you know what the response will be.

Stop arguing with me, lol - you know exactly what I'm trying to say.
