Ok I just want to get some stuff straight. What is the best way to wire up 3 subs? I have not bought anything so don't ask if they are 2 ohm, 4 ohm, DVC or SVC, etc etc, I will make all of these decisions depending on the easiest way to hook them up.
Now, let us say that the 3 subs are 4 ohm. This would make me have to find an amp that is stable at 1 ohm, correct? If I was to hook them all up to a mono amp. So I guess my question is what is the best way to do this? And then what happens if you try to wire 3 subs up to a mono amp that are 2 ohms each? Would an amp that is stable at 1 ohm be able to power those without blowing up, since the load would be under 1, right? And where does dual voice coil/single voice coil come into play in this equation. Gurus, please set me straight if you see some info that is not correct. Thanks for the help! |

You're going to have to play with series and parallel wiring. Three SVC 2 ohm subs can be wired to 6, 1.33, or 0.66 ohms. Three SVC 4 ohm subs can be wired to 12, 2.66, and 1.33 ohms.
You don't "have" to wire everything in parallel and you don't "have" to have a 1 ohm stable amp. |

Thanks a bunch Mrkai,
Is any wiring combo going to give better performance than another? |

No. You'll just need to figure out which method will work best for your sub and amp combination. So you'll want to figure out your target impedance, and then see what wiring method will get you to that.

Well I am just making sure that any amp/sub combo will work. If I find a mono amp that is stable at 1 ohms and covers the RMS of each sub, will it matter if they are 4 ohm or 2 ohm or SVC or DVC? Any particular advantages of any over the other?

If you want to get REALLY technical, there is slightly better performance with SVC subs as there is usually less wire required for installation, and they are better at converting provided wattage to sound. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080607232928AAQ7K2n
Chances are you will not notice a significant difference, though. And no, not ANY sub/amp combination will work. You'll need an amp with your target wattage @ X ohms, and then figure out what sub configuration (voice coil & ohms) will wire up to get your target RMS wattage (amp wattage divided by 3). |

edit, found a very nice link that lets you choose your subs, how many, and the specs on them then it gives you a wire diagram and what the load will be. Thanks for the help guys, I think I got this down.
