I was driving home today and saw a car get pulled over and the guy did just about everything wrong while doing it and I got to thinking why would someone dart across 3 lanes and park right on the white line while getting pulled over? Maybe they did not know these tips Ive listed below.

Here are a few things I do while getting pulled over, and while its my main goal to get out of the ticket im also thinking of mine and the Officers safety and following these tips may get you some brownie points with the officer before he even gets out of the car.. And Im sure Bluestang will agree with me on these.... well maybe he will, lol.

Not exactly in this order but....

1) Dont run! This is the most important one of them all!.. lol

2) Signal while getting over to the shoulder.

3) Turn the car off and when your fully stopped and keep your foot off the brake, brake lights to cops is a signal the car is still in drive and you may have alittle rabbit in ya and want to take off. If its really hot/cold out ill tell him im gonna turn the car back on for the AC/Heat.

4) If im on the highway I will not to pull over on a bridge or next to a guard rail, I try to pull over where I can get as far from the white line as possible (even if I gotta go in the grass), Taking the extra step to help the officer avoid getting hit by traffic is a nice gesture and while they may not come out and thank you for it they do realize what your doing. More cops die by getting hit by passing cars then any other reason.

5) If im on a main road with not much of a shoulder or no shoulder at all. I will always wait to pull into a parking lot or a side street thats not nearly as busy.. Even if it takes me awhile to do so. I got pulled over one time and it took me like 1/2 a mile to pull over, I just explained myself to the officer when he walked up to me, he went from being annoyed to thanking me for thinking of his safety.

6) Night/Day Rain/Shine I always roll down the windows (if its raining I only open the rear halfway). I have tinted windows on all my cars and when they can see in clearly and clear the backseat for possible threats its always nice and most times they thank me for it. (In my truck I open the drivers door, since its lifted its already hard enough for them to see in and I tell them first thing why the doors open.)

7) Dont do anything untill told, from the time im pulled over I dont remove my hands from the steering wheel untill im told to, I figure if im the cop and I walk up someone with there hands on the wheel they dont pose much of a threat as were someone leaned over rummaging in the glove box might not be looking for that insurance card.

8 ) Man up: Admit when your wrong. I cant tell you how many times ive been released with a warning just because I admitting my wrong doing, no one is perfect and we all mess up. If you feel you are in the right dont bother arguing with the officer, **** him off wont help. If you feel strongly that your right then tell it to the judge. But dont admit to anything before the officer accuses you of the offence, these days they all have audio/video and if you admit to speeding before your even accused with it then your admitting guilt and putting yourself in a situation to possibly get more tickets.... maybe he pulled you over for a burnt out taillight you did not know you had and he did not catch you speeding or maybe you think you were speeding when infact you were not.

9) Be polite, Ive been pulled over for BS and from experience Ive realized that getting smart or accusing the officer of not knowing how to do there job correctly is not the best way to get off light.

10) Be honest, if your insurance is not valid, plates expired etc.. and the Officer catch's onto it dont try to make up some bogus excuse about why its not correct, because your moms dog had to go to the animal hospital and you could not get to the dmv on time is not a good reason... this pretty much goes with #8.

Im sure most of what I listed above is common sense to most of us but im surprised how many people cant even signal correctly when getting pulled over, maybe there is something listed you never thought of and will use in the future.

There are more tips out there and I probably know a few more but cant think of them right now. So feel free to chime in with your tips and please lets keep this on topic...

Turn your interior lights on.

Take the keys out of the ignition, and place them on the dash.

Keep your hands on the steering wheel.

Number 3...I would never ever ever turn the car back on while being stopped. Just be uncomfortable for a few minutes, it'll be ok.

Number 6...Why would you open the door without being asked to do so? If I was an officer and the driver I just pulled over opened they're door, I would immediately become very nervous.

Pull over as far to the right as you can, as soon as it's safe. If you're in a city, take the next right, pull far enough forward to leave room for the officer behind you, and then stop.

Put your transmission in Park, take your foot off the brake, roll down your window, put both hands on the steering wheel and wait. If it's dark out, turn on your dome light.

Keep your registration and insurance card clipped to the visor so you don't have to go digging in dark hidden places for them.

DO NOT get out of the vehicle or even open the door unless told to do so.....unless you want to inspect the rifling of the officer's pistol.

Nice one, I do this also but forgot to list, I edited the main post to include this.

#3- I dont mind the extreme hot/cold but if I have the GF 2yr old I dont think she should have to suffer... And I put in there I would tell the officer im gonna start the car back up... If I had ot I would explain why to him and im sure he would understand.

#6- As stated in the main post my truck truck is lifted and I had one officer who could not even see in the truck and had me open the door at gun point, hes the one who gave me the tip to open the door since the truck sits high, he told me to do that and either keep my hands out the door where the officer could see them or keep them on the wheel. I thought it was odd to, but apparently its common for lifted cars/trucks to do this.. Maybe bad advice? Ive been pulled over once since then in my truck and I did just that and the cop never said anything about it but I did tell him why my door was open when he approached me.

I've always wondered what to do when your getting pulled over in the farthest left "fast" lane on a 3-4 lane freeway. Pull over on the left side? Which would be dumb as thats the fast traffic lane.

or try to negotiate your way through the lanes to the right shoulder.

lol I've actually seen people pulled over to the left, usually they're in the HOV lane and not riding 2+. At a point being on the left is safer for the officer since he will be further out of the road than if on the right but if you get an anal cop it's hard to say how he will react.

When I last got pulled over, I pulled into a parking space infront of a building so that I A. had the officers cruiser out of traffic and B. had the car parked facing the building so that there is now way i could run if I would which I won't.

Pulling over in places that are well lit as well as have larger shoulders or parking lots to keep the officer safe tends to win points because it shows you're thinking as well as being concerned for the officers saftey.

I got pulled over for 80 and I admitted it and went on with my day. I drove 3/4 mile and then pulled over on the off ramp.

7 minute stop.

Also remember , SLOW deliberate movements ... Don't be fast to reach for your wallet or registration , EXPLAIN what you are doing ... I HATE twitchy people that just start reaching for something ... Like McCook says that will get you to inspect the rifling on my barrel quicker then anything icon_lol.gif

And normally I can care less about the dome lights I have the takedowns (2 55 watts halogens ) shining down into the car ...
Certain situations /weather/window tint ect the dome light can create glare and make it harder to see IMO.. If you want , after approach , you can tell the officer "I'm going to turn on the dome light to help me locate the registration ect "

Last time I was pulled over was by base police... Try not to forget about those few, unspent rounds in your cupholders after a day out shooting. Doesn't go over to well, especially on a military base. Goes substantially better out in town, but it's still a hassle.

Other'n that, I follow pretty much what everyone else has been mentioning. I tend to turn off the engine, mostly since I don't need questions about it as I don't have much beyond a header and a hi-flo cat and some pipe.

Also, if it's raining I try to find a spot with some decent cover to pull under so the cop doesn't get drenched.

Tips for success:

Make sure he knows that you are interested in the state budget. Let him know that you pay his salary. Call him a public servant. And ask for a glass of water.

Then be sure to notify him that you pay your taxes. You own the road. It is your road and you do as you please.

While he is writing out your ticket be sure to give him a mean look. When he tells you the amount. Look astonished and yell at the top of your lungs, "Can't you see I have enough garbage on teh floor of my car as it is?!! I got 8 or 9 of these mother **** floatin around in here." Then say **** YOU AND YOUR TICKET TOO! I don't have enough money to pay this ****. I spent it all on ***** and beer! Then crumple it up and throw it at his feet. Police like it when you show you can control a situation.

Be sure the cop also knows that you know your rights. They way he doesn't have to read them to you on the way down town.

Always worked for me in the past.

I also stumpled upon a list of things that will ussually help you get out of a ticket. The more you use, the better chances you have.

1. What do you use those rubber gloves for, anyway?
2. So thats what those yellow flashing lights in the school zone means.
3. How long is this going to take? Your wife is expecting me.
4. Hey, wasn’t your daughter a **** queen?
5. Come on write the damn ticket, the bars close in 20 minutes!
6. You’ll never get those cuffs on me... You Homo!
7. On the way to the station let’s get a six pack, oh don’t forget the cig’s.
8. I know I was weaving, but I was trying to hit all the little green men!
9. But officer, I’ve got 2 different drivers licenses from 2 different states! Pick one.
10. Back off, Barney, I’ve got a piece.
11. No, I don’t know how fast I was going. The little needle stops at 110mph.
12. No, offi, offic, lucifer... I’m not as think you are drunk I am. I swear to dog.
13. If I bend over, will I still get a ticket?
14. I’m surprised you stopped me, Dunkin Donuts has a 3 for 1 special!
15. No, you assume the position.

Base cops... Random car searches my ass...

I usually put my top down after I get pulled over so the officer has full view of everything in the vehicle. Then return hands to the wheel and turn down/off my christian music station.

It's more of the ridiculous rules in place... Glow belts, insanely in-depth FOD-checks, driving the F250 over the HAS and getting yelled at, trying to race a B-1 down the flightline access road in our work van and getting pulled over doing 143km/ph... that kind of stuff icon_smile.gif

agree with Mccook. Make us feel comfortable and dont lie. You got caught deal with it. If you are going to lie you are going to get a ticket. If you man up for why you were stopped and were not doing anything too reckless you will get a warning. Obviously if you were going 40+ over you are going to get a ticket...or go to jail icon_wink.gif

main things:
Give me plenty of room to walk up to your vehicle safely and to park my vehicle behind you.

Roll your windows down and turn on dome light if dark out

Dont go reaching in your car for your papers as soon as you stop. Leads me to believe you are reaching for a weapon, hiding drugs, etc

put the vehicle in park and NEVER get out unless instructed, if you get out my first inclination is to go for my weapon because you may pop out with one yourself.

Keep your hands in plain view until instructed to do something with them.

Most officers are killed during normal traffic stops, just keep that in mind, we do everytime we stop a vehicle.
