Its Cool, but also has me worried... Should we really be blasting something that is vital to our orbit? I know its not a huge impact and the moon gets hit by other bigger objects but does that mean we should be able to hit it at will just to see if maybe there is water, and if there is, so what? Whats it gonna prove? Not like were even close to some sort of shortage of water on earth to be looking elsewhere for it.
Probably cost 10billion bucks for this and its not gonna help us here on earth other then to have the knowledge that yes there is or is not water on the moon...Even if it only cost a buck that buck is better spent elsewhere....

I am not a scientist, but from everything I have read about space exploration, water will make it much much easier to possibly inhabit an area for long periods of time. Not necessarily live on the moon, but if we were to make some type of space station on the moons surface, the water would make it much easier to live. It good be used as water, or oxygen, or whatever else scientists can do with water, haha.

As far as the money issue, I like reading about this stuff, exploring the unknown is awesome. If they ever decide to send a one way mission to try and land on a planet (one way because getting back is the much harder and more expensive task), I would totally sign up.

we need the water on the moon to help create fuel and will serve as a jump point, fuel that the rockets use consumes tons and tons of water to make hence why the interest.

and how would this hurt the moon lol do you think those huge craters are a skin disorder? this is like a small pin ***** when comparing it to the size of those

How would this hurt the moon? This isn't exactly a big round rock aimlessly coasting through space. It's a missle with a target.

Who knows what will happen when you shoot a rocket into unknown soil. Probably nothing, but this sounds like a sci fi movie that is about to go completly wrong.

I'm right there with ya Golfer, I'd sign up in a heartbeat to be shot into space to die. Seriously what else are we gonna do?

Maybe we accidentally uncover a small crack in the surface that goes down to the core, and the projectiles we flung at the thing breaks a third of the moon off and it comes crashing down on Singapore.

How **** rowdy would that be?

I had read somewhere about this about 2 months ago, and they said the reason for this was to further push moon ...living. Make a base on the moon.

WARNING.....WARNING.....INCOMING RANT!!!

What really **** me off is that our government is giving NASA hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars to do this stupid s**t when we have SERIOUS issues here on earth! We can worry about the ice on the moon when we are out of this friggin recession! The damned ice isn't going anywhere. Trickle up theory Mr. Obama, Trickle up theory!! Stop all of these ludicrous wasteful programs and cut a check for every legal non-incarcarated adult over the age of 18 a check for $8000 and there goes your recession! Banks and businesses get the money whether the people spend the money or save it. The only people who won't like it are the lobbyists....and who gives a flyin f**k about those ***holes anyway.

This plan should have been implemented instead of the retarded bank bailouts.

I dont really think there going to blow up the moon but shooting missiles at it just dont seem right, feels like a step in the wrong direction.

Dude did anyone actually see this live ? I'd like to nominate it for the Guinness record of "Most Disappointing Astronomical Event Ever" . I waited for a half hour, and then I saw the moon slowly get bigger.. then the screen went white, and then black . And then it showed the crappy control room that looked like eight dudes at computers in a trailer somewhere clapping and congratulating each other . icon_neutral.gif Laaaame . Were there any high-powered telescopes aimed at it that recorded a cooler angle ?

Yea, it was completely underwhelming. What a lovely waste of money that failure was.

Q45guy to NASA....forget the friggin moon! So what if there is ice under all the moon dust? It will take loads of energy to break some of it loose and melt it to be of any use to anything. This money could have been used towards the development of a linear rail launcher for the next series of shuttles so we don't have to waste so much precious fuel. The mag-drive of the rail launcher would accelerate the new shuttle over a length of a few miles to the point that it can be launched into orbit purely on momentum alone.

you do realize the spacecraft used to hit the moon was one that was nearing the end of its life.......its been surveying the moon for quite some time and nasa decided to one up the team that Indian team that supposedly said they found trace elements of water. Nothing was really wasted

I'm glad you think NASA is a big waste of money.

You should be thinking them for all they have done for mankind. I would be willing to bet that something you use everyday came about because of NASA.

Yea, they only wasted 79 million by using an old space craft. We couldn't use that money for something else icon_rolleyes.gif

Your credibility is shot when you throw untrue information into a statement. To set things straight, NASA did NOT develope GPS. icon_rolleyes.gif

GPS was originally NAVSTAR Global Positioning System. NAVSTAR stands for Navigation System with Timing and Ranging. It was developed by the DoD (Department of Defense) for navigation for the military.

^^ I know 0 facts on this, but I thought all satellites are launched and cared for my NASA? Does the DoD also have its own program for satellites, or did they just invent the technology but NASA launches/cares for its satellites?

Tried to google but didn't come up with much.... Again, I know nothing about the topic, just curious.

try again nasa also was one of the partners with the gps system and yes it was designed fro the military but nasa was one of the people who helped design all of it and make it function properly

Show me links or something. My job is GPS based (navigation of Ohio Class submarine) and I have many books here at my desk. Never read anything about NASA developing GPS.

"GPS" was started in 1965 when the Navy needed a way to determine submarine position. This was the Transit system and was 6 satellites in polar orbits. It could only determine 2D coordinates, wasn't very accurate (~25m), and took roughly 10 minutes to get a position.

Later, there were different branches of the armed forces that started developing their own systems. In 1973 the DoD coordinated the developement of one system.

Maybe NASA launched and helped build the satelliets. But saying they developed GPS is like saying your Honda is an American car. Yes it's built in America but it's not an American car.

Regardless of whether you can attribute GPS to NASA or not, you still have to credit them for all of their OTHER accomplishments. I believe its a fantastic organization that deserves more recognition and funding for what they do. Only the close-minded are happy with limiting the human race to this tiny bubble we call "earth." NASA is full of forward thinking individuals that don't dwell in the "here and now" but rather in the future. For all we know, the answers to all these "earthly problems" aren't so earthly themselves. Think about it...

Except when that frozen cheese enters the atmosphere, then melts and becomes like lava. Only...cheese. Get your Doritos ready.
