Well, i just want to get some info on these. I have many questions.
How useful are these, what information will i get from them, whats the best kind(brand), how many channels should i get, portable or not?

I wouldl like to find any information on these things if you've had used them or not. I don't want to do the 'google' thing b/c it would take hours upon hours to get the same answers on here. Thanks.

Edit: OK, i want to figure out where the cops are hidding... should i go with a police scanner or cb? Whats the difference. I'll google some tonight and see what i find.

I have a cb radio, its fairly new also, but either cops arent using cb's or mine just sucks. lol. Id say just go for the scanner, it pretty much gives you dispatch information. You would probably want to go with a portable one, mainly cause its easier to fit inside your car...assuming thats when you want to know where the po po are a hidin. Alrighty, i know this wasnt much help but i got start gettin ready for class. Have fun gettin all your po po findin information!

I have a cheap ($80) handheld Radioshack police scanner in my truck. I keep it wedged next to my seat and have it patched into the back of my headunit w/ the wire hid under the console. Its kind of neat to listen to when there's nothing on the radio and you're tired of CD's. (Just have to make sure the windows are up!) I'd say it works with 80% of the frequencies that are available to me. Some towns just don't work, even w/ a confirmed freq# from a cop I know. In the past, we've done some ambulance chasin, and gotten the 411 on where the hell flying cops are going sometimes. As far as legality, its fine in NJ, but just consider keeping it hidden and not broadcasting cauze I'm sure they don't like the fact that its there.

police scanner would be better..

police scanners work here, but if you are found with one in your car, its jail time, there illegal, i think cbs are kinda the thing for the past with police, those truckers still use cbs tho, but i know for the fact the cops around here use those walkie talkie type things, dont know thats what they are for sure, but a scanner works great, lot i know have on and get the low down on things

ok, i found out the difference, but can police scanners pick up cb frequencies?? That is what i want to know. See truckers will gladly tell where the police are hiding, but they use cb's .... but if i can pick cb frequencies on the police scanner then thats what i'm going with for sure. I don't care the price... thats not gonna affect what i get. Also you can't buy handheld cb's, can you? So what brand and how many channels should i get??

a scanner is what you want to listen for police but most police frequencies are encripted now so you can't listen in. If you get a scanner keep it hidden. I have one in my can it's a portable one so it's easy. it's nice to listen to cause you can get early notification about accidents off fire frequencies or some non-encripted police frequencies.
I have a CB too. CB's are nice if you're going on a long road trip cause truckers are willing to help you if your lost or want to know what the weather is like further on up the road. the only frequency that cops monitor is channel9 but thats for emergencies only so no one really talks on that channel.

get a Cb cause truckers can tell you where they find them and the scanner you really only know where a cop is headed cause of an emergency. Cops hardly ever tell their location on the radio to dispatch. A lot of cities have GPS on the cop cars so dispatch knows where they are and don't have to ask. CB really won't get oyu into trouble with the law when pulled over but the scanner is a different story.

your best bet is a scanner. but if they're using an encrypted signal your SOL unless you can get a verification number to unlock the encryption. and like what was said before a lot of police are using different methods. i know where i live a lot of them use nextel to communicate in addition to the radio. i can't recommend a brand cause it really doesn't matter. pretty much all the scanners are the same and can hold more frequencies than you'll ever use.

yeah, alot of cops use cell phones here too... i always see them on the phone, so the major question is can i pick up cb frequencies with a police scanner... i'll try to search for it and report back if i find anything out.

i'm pretty sure you can't, at least i haven't been able to. although some times depending on the frequency you can pick up cordless phone conversations on a scanner (only one side of the conversation)

the video in your sig is hysterical dude

Cops do NOT reveal their location over a police scanner, get a CB. Scanners = jailtime in a vehicle, keep the scanner at the house.

Scanners are only illegal in like 6 states and only 5 more if you use it for a criminal act(which in that case your gonna get arrested anyways) Some scanners can pick up CB frequencies.... so i decided a scanner with these capabilities. I'm taking a road trip and Ken. is the only state that i pass through that its illegal, in which case: the batteries will be taken out and it put in a suitcase in the back so they know that i wasn't using it if they find it or search or w/e.

This made me think of something... if you ever call the cops to report something, turn the scanner off... it's an easy way to **** us off if we hear our own voices in the background. Believe it or not some people call in stuff just to hear it dispatched and it ties up and officer and makes our jobs more difficult.

Chipped and Clipped means it is cut, upgraded, and soldered up to 30 watts of output into an external amp that pushes anotehr 250 through it. Illegal, but strong as **** icon_twisted.gif

Uniden makes a nice product and they have a much bigger selection. I'm not saying the Radio Shack one is bad, i'm just saying it's not the only one.
