how do you know whether you should order a common ground or common posotive and how do you wire them into an automotive application?

Your LED controller will specify whether it can handle common positive or ground. And you wire them into an auto application much like any other LED product. Except RGB modules are best used with a controller so you can use the full range of the rainbow.

Is white light one of the colors and how long does it take for the controller cycle thru colors, Thanx

You can create white by having all red, green, and blue chips illuminated at the same time. The cycle speed will be dependent on the controller you choose.
