Question
Two Cathodes is too bright for me. Can I just buy another transformer and use one cathode per transformer? - by Patrick (Westchester IL)
Answer
Yes, the transformer has two outlets; you can use just one if you want.
Question
I'm using your dummy-bulbs to install a CCFL kit in my trunk, so as to preserve my stock wiring. Will I need to install a fuse somewhere between those wires and the transformer?
Answer
No, if your wiring it into the sock harness then the fuse for that stock wiring would cover it.
Question
what's brighter? L.E.D. Flex strips or FlowLighting Cold Cathode? - by Justin (West Virginia)
Answer
Sorry, not really a simple answer. It depends on which color(s) as well as which size(s) you are comparing.
Question
I was just wondering if you could say how much each CCFL weighs as well as how much the transformer weighs? Thanks! - by Eric (Brockton, MA)
Answer
Each Cathode tube weighs 1 ounce and the Transformer weighs 2 ounces.
Question
ok, so i just bought 2 sets of the 12" blue cold cathode kits, but i'm receiving replacements because the 4 i got either shattered or burned out within the first 10 minutes, if this happens again, will i be able to get a refund or an exchange for something else off the site that is the same total price? - by Angelo (Union Bridge, MD)
Answer
Yes.

Question
If I wanted to put 2 12" cold cathodes in my front headliner at the top of my windshield in my 2008 Ford Focus, where would I be able to hide the transformer box? - by Travis
Answer
Possibly in your headliner?
Question
If I put these in the trunk to light up an amp rack, will they mess up with the bass from the subwoofers?
Answer
It depends how close they are to the subwoofers, and also how loud the subwoofers get.

You can try it and see what happens. Or you can always go with an LED product instead.
Question
Can I wire two kits to the same power source? And if so, should I wire them in parallel or series? - by Garrett (Upland, CA)
Answer
You can wire two kits to the same power source in parallel.
Question
i just put in my lights a week ago thay worked great i went on a trip i had them on for a few hours then thay went out it not the fuse did the transformer blow or the lights the red light is still glowing on the transformer - by robert (ocala fl)
Answer
Sounds like you received defective tubes.
Question
I just wanted to make sure, I bought one Cathode kit for my front and want to by one for the read soon. I purchased one kit and your fuse holder with a 3 amp fuse. Is this too big of fuse for 1 kit or is this right? Thanks - by Josh (Yuba City, CA)
Answer
That fuse will be fine
Question
wire gauge Q. im wanting to buy 4 kits & use 2 switches, each switch running 2 kits. so what gauge wire should be used 4 the initial power from battery, (this is in a car) the split to the 2 switches, then to the 2 transformers (each switch)? also would a 3amp fuse be ok for the 2.8 total draw?
Answer
18 gauge will be fine.
A 3 amp fuse would be terrific as well
Question
I ordered some cold cathodes and was planning to mount these on my headliner. what is the best way to mount and wire the components. i have an 05 scion xb and i got 4 cathode kits, 3 of which being on the roof. Thanks - by John (West Fargo, ND)
Answer
Many people use Zip ties to mount their cathodes.
Question
ok then have a new question since i refuse to buy anymore leds right now i'd like to use my cold cathodes what would be the best to wire them into? - by Dan
Answer
Any 12 volt power source will be fine.
Question
I would like to try some of the 12 inch cathodes for night photography. Is there a way to power these with regular batteries so I can use them outside. - by Cindi
Answer
As long as it is a 12v battery you should be OK. These are very fragile and should be used in a stationary place.
Question
I was woundering if i were to buy four sets of the 12" and two sets of the 4" cathodes could i connect them all to one music interface control and can they all be powered by one power suorce and if so should i add a fuse along with it - by Mr. (Texas)
Answer
You can connect them to a music interface, but you should know that you can connect a maximum of two cathode transformers to one music interface. The music interface can power a maximum of 2 amps. Each cathode transformer draws .7 amps.

They can all be powered by the same power source. Yes, you should always use a fuse.
Question
Im looking for aqua catholds would that be possible to custom order? - by Brooke (Jacksonville,FL)
Answer
Sorry! Aqua is not a color that our manufacturer makes.
Question
would you recomend using these as an underbody kit to save money? i have 2 4 inch tubes in my grill and they seem to be holding up well to weather etc. i was thinking 12 inch tubes all around 2 under each bumper and 3 on the sides and maybe a couple 4 inch ones to fill in gaps. any suggestions?
Answer
Sure this can be done! But if you want better glow, you are better off using LED's.
It's a little more expensive but better light output, Check out our Pirahna or SMD Bars...

Question
i got two of the 4 inch red cathodes and put them in the trunk of my car. when i open the trunk the light is barely visible and then after a couple of minutes they get maybe twice as bright but still not as bright as i expected. do cathodes normally take time to like warm up or something? - by Patrick (Belvidere, NJ)
Answer
A warm up time is not unheard of. Red is also a pretty dim color. Perhaps you can add more lights, or use 12 inch or a LED product instead?
Question
are the UV cathodes a really bright purple or do they just create a blacklight look? I think it would extremly cool to have these just as a blacklight but dont want a bright purple look that will fill the car. What kinda look do they make? - by Dan (Cincinnati, OH)
Answer
They are a very dim purple, with a black-light effect.
Question
i have the blue superthin led dome lights. I am thinking of getting the blue cathodes for the sub and foot wells but want to make sure the colors all go together. Does this blue come close to the color of the superthin dome light blue? - by Dan (Cincinnati, OH)
Answer
Not really. LEDs and cathodes are completely different technologies and do not match.
Question
would velcrow work to attatch my light under the front dash? =]

and i only got one swith, is that going to work for two cathode kits? - by krista
Answer
Sure, velcro might work. I'd just use cable ties though.

Yes, of course, one switch can easily control multiple cathode kits.
Question
Is it possible to hook a 12" cathode tube to a power supply in a house? Do I need a converter? - by Sam (Michigan)
Question
can i see a picture of how the uv cathodes look inside a car at night...im thinking about getting them for inside my car but im worried that they are not bright enough.
Answer
Its really hard to convey how the UV/Blacklight looks with a photo. You just need to see them for yourself and determine whether they are bright enough for your needs.
Question
if i hook 2 12" blue cathodes up to my amp so they will flash to my music do i need a fuse or anything or can i just wire it right on with the red/black wire - by eric

Question
Can I run a single cathode off of the transformer? - by Marcello (San Antonio,Texas)
Answer
Yes!
Question
I have a 72 Monte Carlo and want to put the white 12" cathodes in my engine compartment to light my engine while working at night, how easy is it to wire in a new transformer? I need way more than 22" to reach the right and left of the compartment and I know I can't extend the white wires, if I order 1 kit with an extra transformer can you show a diagram or picture to wire each cathode with an independant transformer? Thanks... - by Marcello (San Antonio,Texas)
Answer
There is no additional wiring you'd have to do other than adding the power and ground to each transformer. You'd simply have only one cathode plugged into each transformer rather than two.
Question
on the page that says "Our popular products for Scion tC, Scion xB, Scion xA, and xD" in the picture is it the pink or purple cathode?

-how do u hook them on iside your car? with zip ties? lol i dont know.. thats what you sent me for my inferno LED kit! - by krista (madras oregon)
Answer
The picture has purple cathodes.

Zip ties are a good mounting style. You can also use a strong double-sided tape, which you can get just about anywhere.
Question
I have a case where there is a swing open door on the front. I am planning on putting a 4" CCFL in the door and having the cathode turn on only when the door is open. Could I cut of the old switch leading from the molex connector to the transformer and replace it with a push on/push off switch? If possible, would it be reconmended? - by Matteo (Florida, USA)
Answer
Take a look at out "Adjustable Door Pin Switch" for this situation.

http://www.oznium.com/pin-switch
Question
is the cold cathode tube small enought to fit under a pool table rail and would the 12" put enough light off if i had one on each end - by joshua
Answer
Instead of using cold cathode kits, I would use our Flexible LED Strips.
They are available in varying lengths and would probably last a whole lot longer.
And are you wanting to put them under the actual table or underneath the felt bumper rail?
Question
Can I use one on off switch for 2 kits? - by Jeremy (Levittown, NY)
Answer
Yes, absolutely!
Question
Would it be possible to connect these to my amplifier (either through the speaker terminals or something else?) Also, if i did and didn't have a switch, do you think they would die pretty fast if they were on whenever my subs were on? - by Nick (Cedarburg, WI)
Answer
You can connect these to any 12 volt source.

You should absolutely not connect these to your speaker terminals because the speaker terminals are not a 12 volt source.

You could try connecting them to the power wires coming into the amplifier. That is a 12 volt source.

It is a really bad idea not to hook them up to a switch.
Question
Can you show the difference between the purple and uv cathodes?
Answer

UV = Far Left
Purple = 4th from Left
Question
can you run these in series, or would you have to run them in parallel. - by Jordan (Virginia Beach, VA)
Answer
Must be in parallel.
Question
What is the color temperature of the white ccfl? I was thinking of using the 4" for light in a rv. Any chance there is a warm white (35000K)?
Answer
The temperature is about 4300k. It's a very crisp white, just like a normal florescent bulb. There are no other variations of the white. The orange cream might suit your needs if you need that sort of color. It has a orangeish peach hint.
Question
If I order a 2 tube kit can I get two different color tubes or do I have to order 2 separate kits. - by George (Calgary, Alberta Can)
Answer
Two kits. It's best to have back ups anyway, and the kits are super affordable anyway.
Question
if i order a blue and yellow kit can i have 2 different color tubes on a single transformer? An example, blue/yellow instead of blue/blue or yellow/yellow. - by Chad
Answer
Yes
Question
how would i go about waterproofing the cold cathodes? i know silicone and tape but what parts? - by mike~84 (pensacola fl)
Answer
Any connections to the transformer, the heat vent on the transformer, where the wires go into the cathode tube, and right on the edges in between the round tube and the cube edges of the cathode tubes. Remember, it's very unlikely they will end up being 100% waterproof, however doing so will work well for cathodes in grills and such.
Question
is it possible to get a transformer set-up for longer wires i get the point "dont extend the wires" but can i get a transformer with a little more power or a capasitor maby ? - by christina (Indianapolis , IN)
Answer
Sorry, we do not custom make other transformers. Just purchase another one and power one cathode with each. Then they can be as far apart as you wish.
Question
I want to use the 4" kit as an underbody light kit for my 1:10 scale Nissan 350Z Street Mayhem Tuner remote controll car made by
Nikko. How can I power them under neath the car? - by Jacob (Pensacola, FL)
Answer
Batteries or an AC adapter. I think LEDs would be better for you since they draw less power than Cathodes.
Question
a friend on a forum has had (at least) 2 of your kits burn out on him. what's the deal?
Answer
The cathode kits may burn out for various reasons. Could've been faulty product, could've been installation error, could've spilled soda into the transformer. There are lots of reasons. It is impossible to manufacture a product that will never have any issues, and for how many cathodes we sell, we have a very small ratio of errors and faulty products. It is unfortunate to hear your friend has had issues with our product, however we stand by what we sell, as well as our satisfaction guarantee.
Question
I just wanted to verify... In various forums there are warnings stating not to wire CCFL's to a dimmer wire for a 'fade' effect, such as a factory dome light connected to a dimmer. Doing so will harm the transformer. Is this true? - by Justin (Atlanta GA)
Answer
Correct.
Question
I notice a few of your action shots from the scion xB's with 4" cathodes in their 'oh sh!T' handles. My question is, the 'oh sh!t handles' are at least 30" apart, but you say the white wires only run a total of 22", so how did they do this? - by James (Fort Walton Beach)
Answer
They used extra transformers.
Question
Is the only way for these cathodes to turn off with a switch? (both when the car is on and when it is off) - by Ricardo (San Juan, Puerto Ric)
Answer
They can hook up in many ways. You can hook them to wires already in your car so the cathodes react to different things, like your dome light or headlights or when the door opens, etc... We usually recommending adding your own switch, though.
Question
do you have a picture of the yellow and the orange cream? - by kurt (monterey park)
Answer
Question
I have a UV dome light and I'm about to buy the 25 UV dome light. How different is the purple from the UV? Is it brighter and I assume the purple doesn't make neon colors glow like the UV would. Finally, is the purple dark purple or does it have a kinda pinkish purple. Thanks alot. - by David
Answer
Yes, the purple is brighter and doesn't make things glow. The UV doesn't put off much visible light since it is a black light. The purple cathodes are a light purple, maybe a slight pink tint to it.
Question
Whats the temp range for these cathodes? for instance in winter and in summer. I plan to light up the bed of my truck. Also, i've ordered some white flex LED strips and the first two were a cool white (kinda blue-ish) and the other two were a warm or off white (more like a yellowish green white). wierd i know, but i put them in my instrument cluster and they shine bright no doubt, but i can tell the difference. Just wondering did you guys go to offer two types of white?
- by evilkid (texas)
Answer
Cathodes can handle just about any temperature, from Arizona summers to Canadian winters. Just be sure to install them properly - away from anything that might hit them, seal up the transformers and cathodes if they can get exposed to rain and such, etc...
Question
Are the power and ground wire 18 gauge? - by Steve
Answer
No, they are a smaller 20-22 gauge.
Question
can i use your inverters to power a diffrient companies tubes - by jim
Answer
You can try it, although we won't be responsible if something goes wrong.
Question
I plan on buying 5 of the 12" kits and putting them under my car. For the sake of a clean wiring job, I'd like to wire them up all together from one wire. Will 16 gauge wire be sufficient or should I go with something thicker such as a 10 gauge wire? - by Konrad (New York)
Answer
16 gauge is sufficient.
Question
How many watts does the cathode draw? - by Steve (Silver Spring, MD)
Answer
Read the description. It says "Each cathode transformer draws about 0.7 amps of power at 12 volts."

So, Watts = Amps x Volts
So, 0.7 x 12 = 8.4 watts at 12 volts
Question
Can this kit be hooked up to a music interface? And if so where in the wiring?
Answer
You would hook up the red and black wires coming from the transformer into the music interface, or use the cathode music interface sold here at Oznium: http://www.oznium.com/cathode-music

See this photo diagram for how to attach the cathodes to the interface sold here.
Question
How heat resistant are the cathodes? - by Gubinder
Answer
The cathodes "heat resistance" has not been measured. The glass element itself is pretty heat resistant. The acrylic tube around the cathode will melt when exposed to enough heat.
Question
What are the dimensions of the Cathode Tubes? I want to put these in a clear PVC tube with an inner diameter of 1.5". Will they fit? Also, does the cathode provide 360 degrees of light, like a florescent tube? - by John (Chelsea, AL)
Answer
The end caps on the cathode tube, which is the biggest part of the case, are a 1/2" cube. You could easily fit two or perhaps three tubes inside your PVC.

And yes, the cathodes provide a 360-degree light span (CCFL = cold cathode florescent lamp!)
Question
We know we cannot extend the white wires, however might there be a wire extension kit available in maybe 6-12inch lengths in the future? if not why is the reason to not extend the white wires other than a possible short out?
Answer
No there's no chance of an extension kit. The cathodes run on high voltage AC (alternating current) with low amperage. For this reason, they are sensitive to extra resistance that comes with longer length wires. The power output of the transformer is specifically engineered for the cathodes and the 12" of wire. So, extending the white wires could cause the tubes to dim, not light up all the way, or even get too warm.
Question
I have bought red cathodes before (not from Oznium.com) and when I got them they really were more of a girlie pink color. I was told this was "red" cathode color. Are the cathodes you sell really red like the pictures shown ?
Answer
The pictures are not fake. Whether they are red or pink is subjective. They look red to me. Some people think they are too pink. If you are not happy with the color, just send them back for an exchange or refund.
Question
When I got my neons I had to extend my white wires so that I could put them in and around my trunk. I extended them a couple feet but noticed that when I extended them more than 3-4 feet they would light up halfway. What's up with that? I extended them a little without any problems. - by levi (1989 orr rd sc 29726)
Answer
Do not extend the white wires!
We say it in the product description. Read where it says, "Can I extend the white wires past the transformer?"
Question
I bought 2 - 12" cathode lights and I want to install them on my own. Can you give me directions?
Answer
Please read this comprehensive topic in the Oznium Forums.
Question
Can I put my cold cathodes under my car with out doing anything to the tube? - by juan (Bent Mountain, VA)
Answer
Yes you can put cold cathodes under your car without doing anything to the tube.

If you drive in the rain, you should seal them with silicone. If you don't drive in the rain, or don't mind if they short out, then you don't have to do anything to the tube.
Question
What would I hook them up to for a power supply if I wanted to place them in my house or my garage? Without having a full size car battery in my house. - by Zach (Croswell, MI)
Answer
Question
Can you get an extention for the white wire that runs from the cathode to the transformer? - by Zach (Croswell, MI)
Answer
No. Do not extend the white wires!

Read the product description where it says "Can I extend the white wires past the transformer?"
Question
Where all can you put cathodes? - by Alex (Great Bend, KS)
Answer
Wherever you can get 12 volts DC power. So, to name a few popular places in a car where people put cathodes: under the dash, under the seat, in the door panel, on the headliner, in the engine bay, in the trunk, under the car. You can also put them in your house, on your boat, or on your motorcycle.
Question
I want to put these on my moped. Will they kill my battery? - by mike
Answer
No, the cathodes will not kill the battery. You may also consider flexible LED strips which are smaller, draw less power, and are more durable.
Question
Are the cold cathodes street legal?
Answer
It depends on the laws in your state and where in your car you install them.

Even if the law says they are legal, you could still get pulled over and hassled because the cops may not know the law. Even if they are illegal, you could go for years without getting pulled over because cops don't care enough, or might not see you. If you have some cathdoes under your dash you will probably be ok. If you have flashing red and blue cathodes glued all around on the outside of your car, chances are, you'd get pulled over.

Trying to figure out the legality of cold cathodes in a certain area can be very difficult. It isn't as simple as looking up the vehicle code for your state. Vehicle code can be very confusing and conflicting. Even a call or email to your local police station can be misleading.

People have been told one thing and even had written proof, only to be pulled over and slapped with a ticket by an officer who may not know the intricacies of the law.

Regardless of the law in your area, there are things you can do to reduce your chances of being hassled.

  • Hide the light source so it is not directly visible from the road. Make a shield with a long piece of "L" aluminum or steel. Use black electrical tape to hide a section of the light.

  • Take extra caution to obey all laws. If cold cathodes are perfectly legal in your area, and you are speeding just a few miles over the limit, a cop is more likely to give you a speeding ticket than if you had no lights on.

  • Save the strobing red/blue for the car show or your driveway. Blue and red might be fine to cruise with as a solid color, but as soon as they strobe, you may cross the line as "impersonating a cop"

  • Keep a copy of the vehicle code in your car. You can just print or copy the section that deals with lighting. Present it to the officer if you are pulled over.

  • Respect police officers. They protect you when you are being shot at, they protect you when your house is broken into. Respect them and they should respect you.

There's a lot of good info in the legality section of the Oznium Forum.
Question
If I buy a 12" kit and a 4" kit, can I mix up the cathodes and run a 12" and a 4" off each transformer?
Answer
Yes!
Question
Do these have the same draw as an LED tube?
Also do these make an audible noise when lit from the cathodes or the transformer? How are these with shock or vibration? - by Chris (Modesto, CA)
Answer
As stated in the description, each cathode kit draws 0.7 amps of power. An "LED tube" is too general. What type of LED tube, how long, how many LEDs? Sure, some LED tubes draw less power than the cathodes, and some draw more.

The cathodes do not give off any noise detectable by the average human. The cathodes are fragile. The 12" will break if you kick them under the dash. The 4" will likely never break. If they are mounted by a loud subwoofer, they will usually be OK.
