obd 1 or 2? you can pick up a scanner or go to autozone and have them run it for free.

What do you mean... flash codes on the dash? On OBD1 you can jump 2 pins on the connector, and it will flash the engine light, which it is flashing the code...... but thats not OBD2 |

^Some OBD-II Systems do the same thing, they will flash the Check Engine Light in sequence to make a code. Some Chrysler vehicles (like Neons) use a key-on-off sequence to trigger this CEL code flash while other vehicles (like GM's) sometimes require a set of pins to be shorted. Justin... If your referring to a 1998 Olds Cutlass Supreme, unfortunately I do not see any way to access the codes without a SCAN tool or cheap code scanner from an auto parts store. I'd just look into getting a cheap Actron (or similar) code scanner from your local auto-parts store and using that. The bright side being that the code scanner you buy should support most other OBD-II vehicles, so you can use it for more than just the Cutlass. L8R, |

wow... the zone was open.
i didnt jot down the potential problems, but from my memory it sounded like a emissions problem, or possible vacuum leak. i keep trying to find a replacement evap canister, since it was listed as a potential failed part. though, im not finding one - maybe they dont exist for this car? maybe its the egr? but at $100 plus i cant afford to just try things. the lady at ricerzone was kinda worthless. guess ill just go check for vac lines being disconnected. the light didnt come back on after 15 miles of drivng :\ |

didn't they give you the code numbers??
Unless your EGR is truely broken, you can clean them and most will work again. (a can or two of throttle body cleaner) Since you have the cutty, you probably either have the L36 or the L67, more details and the code numbers would allow me/us to help you a lot more. |

i dont remember the code number but the generic code description was for emissions system fault.
no the cutty is a 3100 - id love it to be a 3.8... but my beretta runs just fine, also a 3100, and seems to be getting awesome gas mileage. for months the cutlass has been getting poor mileage, but running just fine, with no CEL's. finally i have a clue as to what might be wrong. |

eh i think the code would be more specific if it were an o2 and not an egr.
i havent had it for long, like a year, put 10k miles on it is all. its got 99k on it. |
