I want to put flame throwers on my car, without spending more than a hundred bucks.

Can I use my stock catback exhaust system. How much effort is needed to make these things work? what kits are the best?

They don't make kits to do it right, and its gonna cost you more then 100 bucks to do it right. your car is far too new to do it on the cheap

Making something that ignites a spray of gasoline in a car that you plan to ride in on the cheap seems like a contender for an upcoming "Darwin Award" to me... If it were me, and I had a burning desire (no pun intended... heh) to do this, the FIRST thing I'd be asking myself would be "if price were no object, how safe could I achieve this result"?

If price IS an object, maybe sticking to a less... um... "explosive" mod is in order... May I interest you in some of Phil's new (non-combusting) LED strips? icon_lol.gif

Well, you have to admit that something like:

"While attempting to turn his car's gas tank into a flame thrower, using only zip-ties, PVC tubing and baling wire, California native "IceDog" was vaporized when a stray spark set fire to the entire tank of gasoline..."

...really DOES sound like something you'd read in there. Just the thought of doing this makes me nervous, but the though of doing it anyhting less than 100% as safely as possible really makes me cringe.

heh. that sounds EXACTLY like something from the darwin awards. personally i think the ones where they survive but are "steralized" are funnier.

My all-time favorite Darwin Award story still has to be the JATO (Jet-Assist Take-Off) unit someone allegedly fit to a car and fired up - they ended up planted INSIDE a cliff face 100' above the road, like something in a Roadrunner cartoon...

I think Mythbusters tested that one on one of their shows (I'd live to see that).

if i can do it on a sundance you can do it on an acura. and the kit i did was a cheaper kit and i havent had any real problems with it yet. but i would advice having an aftermarket catback with a test pipe.

lol sounds like I'm getting mixed advice here.

I'm not going into the fuel line or anything like that. I'm merely igniting the remaining fuel residue that is exiting the exhaust pipe. The kits are merely sparkplugs drilled into the exhaust. I don't think there is much of a risk here.

The kits are so cheap on ebay; I think I will buy one and try it just for fun. Obviously, you Pork have lots of experience, but it appears your flames are much larger than I plan.

My car is pretty new and it is a dual exhaust, so I don't expect the flames to be pretty big. But 50 bucks is worth it. IMO

That would be an incredibly ricey thing to do on a 2000 acura TL.

The catalytic converter filters out much of the unburnt fuel, so it is going to depend what the combustion mixture is like. In a carbureted car, you could tune the idle/float level/power valve fuel settings to make this sort of thing work better, but you won't be able to do that very easily with a new, fuel injected car.

Any newer Japanese car gets pretty good emission ratings; aren't TL's ULEV cars?

^ exactly. methinks the "test pipe" aka NO CAT is the key to the solution here.

my guess is youre keeping your cat. its not going to work, and is a waste of money.

x2 on ricey on an acura as well.

It's actually not topping the RICE scale here in Los Angeles. So, I'm not too doubtful on it. I think spoilers are the ricest thing you can do.

The emissions is the only problem.
Can I test it by holding a flame by my exhaust?

You can try, but nothing is going to happen.

Fuel Injected cars run pretty efficient, when you try to run them rich bad things happen. Not only that, but the cat is going to catch those fumes you need to BURN. If you remove the cat, you will have better results but still would need to run your car rich. Running the car rich does one of several things, the most severe being the washing of your cylinder walls with gasoline which is NOT friendly with your oil. Basically, your car will need an oil change every 250 miles or you risk damaging your engine.

An OPTION, if you want to spend some coin and some serious time researching, is to inject. Get yourself an EFI fuel pump ( or two if your running dual exhaust ), two coils, two plugs, two wires, and make some nozzles ( I use crimped brake lines ) as well as some safety devices to prevent back burning, and you'll be set.

Skipping the use of safety devices would allow burn back, the fire would follow the gasoline into your reservoir or gas tank and an explosion will be likely. That is kinda babbeled together, I am not getting nearly enough sleep lately. That is all for now

that myth was busted. but they did strap 3 large rockets to a car and fired them and that alone was pretty cool!

you can do it for under 100 bucks and not have fire like that. you dont need a seperate fuel pump with nozzles. you do need the coil and wire though.

thats a **** video of mine. its not as big of a flame as everyone thinks it will be, but still cool as ****.
