This question is to anyone who has built their own intake.
I know that it is possible to build one for a lot less than a kit costs. This is what I will be doing. But before I go and buy the tubing I need from an automotive store, does anyone know of any online sites first that sell tubing and couplers for a decent price? I have only bought the maf adapter and a mini breather. All that's left is the tubing and couplers. Thanks! |

Don't bother looking online. Any discounts you'll get from an online dealer will be eaten up by shipping costs.

we may be able to help except we have no idea what kind of tubing and we also have no idea what your engine bay looks like to give suggestions

I can fix that... engine bay looks like this.
I am going to make the new intake follow the same path as the old, only with 3 inch tubing. I was just asking incase anyone knew of anything cheaper. I have also heard that people have gone to an exhaust shop and had some custom bending done to one tube. That is also something I want to look into. So if all else fails I'll buy the tubing where I got the maf and breather from and the whole intake will be about $60 or so. |

^horrible idea.
pvc pipe isnt heat resistant. it will heat up and melt, releasing toxic fumes when exposed to underhood temps. order mandrel bent alum/steel tubing from somewhere like jc whitney |

go to lows and buy a tube for heating and cooling systems. the metal doesnt heat up amazingly fast and you can get 3" diameter and 6 feet is like 8 bucks. and your not going to feel it like you might think. intakes are made on cars typically a certain way for a reason.

I would never use PVC anyway, so don't worry about that. And yeah, I know you won't feel it. It's not like those 20hp stickers that some cars have :p
Any idea on how much an exhaust shop would charge to bend a shape like my intake? |

it looks like u would need a 90bend, and then like a 45? for right by the battery.

i wouldnt even bother with making an air intake. just run a good quality filter in the box and wrap it in some sort of heat reflective material.

Why would I still want it breathing through a 1 inch tube in the fender? I'm at least deleting the box and adding a better cone filter.

PVC is ghetto and gets hot and chrome intake tubes heat up as well, warming your air. "Iceman" intakes are made of rubber and are really expensive. They are considered one of the better intakes on the market.
Your stock intake tubing is rubber, and free :) Replace the air box with a cone or whatever you want because it is way too restrictive as is, and open up the path for more air to come into the filter and you're done. My intake temps were cooler when I had my 5.0 mustang with the stock rubber tubing and a filter then with a chrome intake. |

open cone filter is drawing in warm-hot under hood air. pointless for peak engine performance or economy. u want cool, dense air.
so what if its breathing through a 1" hole (really one inch?) its not like u have a big block v-8. uless u want the "uber cool" whoosh sound of all that wonderful air rushing into the engine...do as i said. if u wanna mod it, mod it so u enlarge that hole from the air box to the fender opening. |

Sorry, I really don't want this to turn into an argument, but it helped my other car and it will help this one as well, I've done my research. There aren't too many down falls with increasing airflow.

I bought a cheap ass intake off of ebay. My coolant temperature gauage reads 1mm cooler than with the stick air box. Can't realy feel a difference but it sounds nice!

Has anyone been able to install a cool air intake for a Volvo S80? I got one earlier online and then the shop here told me it was really a universal one and that he couldn't do it (long story).

*UPDATE*
So I installed the cone filter, didn't do the piping yet. Still deciding if i want to or not. But wow what a difference. The engine sound is much deeper and throatier and there is a noticeable difference if power. It gets up and goes faster in the higher rpms than it did before. So I guess it is the voodoo horse power. |

louder and throatier = power
clean air filter v. dirty air filter = more get up n go at high RPMs

what exactly are you doing cause having a cool air box is good cause of the cooler air
some one said about warm under bonnet (hood) air isnt economical actualy it is economical more economical than cool air dosent burn as efficiently as warm air you burn more of the fule an its usful in colder climates anyhew if your realy after power make your self a good cold air box wants to be as smooth an as easy inside for the air to flow through to your engine if not option b is get ether an sbend to have the end where the cool box is now considering you said you were ditching it an you could probibly go to many muffler shops an ask if they could make you a s bend or 90 degree bent pipe but you want it welded in sections a bent pip will be mishapen an most likely kink at large sizes like 3" you dont need thick steel but you could get them or most metal fabricators to make you one an tig welded an all shined up an mirror finnished but personaly i dont think thats cheap unless you can do all that yourself i would buy the cone filter from a store there about £20 in england an $40 in canada which with the exchange rate is practicly the same dont know about the us tho so unless you can tig weld there aint much chance of doing it cheaply |
