I was at work, doing my work...
and I could feel my blood sugar drop all of a sudden. I ate an oatmeal cream pie I had in my desk, then hurried downstairs to the vending machines to get some more food and a bottle of water. I had to sit in the elevator on the way back up to my work area. Made it to my desk area and collapsed on the floor and tried to eat what I bought. A co-worker saw me sitting there and just proceeded to talk to me (shes a freakin moron). My boss comes in, see me, then immediately says "low blood sugar?!" and immediately calls the ER for a nurse (I work in a hospital) ER line was busy, but they got one from somewhere else who brought peanut butter and crackers. Someone else brought a wheelchair. The trip down to the ER was all a daze. I got freezing cold, and they had to keep piling blankets on me to keep me warm. I couldn't stop shaking. I was told my face was as white as a sheet. My boss gets me admitted to the ER where they ***** my finger....test blood sugar I think (it was going up by then because I had been eating) then they took 4 tubes of blood to run blood work on me. My fiance's mom showed up (also works in the hospital) and not too long after that, my woman shows up. My dad eventually shows up and the nurse makes me eat the lamest ham sandwich I have ever had and drink a Pepsi to try to stabilize my blood sugar. I was feeling a bit better after that and eventually got released after an hour and a half or so. Twas kinda scary. I think you can go in a coma if blood sugar drops enough. **I am not diabetic** I think they called it hyperglycemia.

Oh well, LSU definetly deserved it. Respects needs to be given when due.
At the beginning of the year, OSU was projected to finish 3rd in the Big-10, and we made it to the NC game. This was supposed to be a "rebuilding" year, and we made it to the end. Still proud to be a buckeye fan! We'll be back. |

I'm curious of that too, as my best friend is type 1 diabetic. It is a good thing you tried to/did eat that is for sure. |

Seems crazy to me that a person who is having an issue with their blood has a few vials of blood drawn. I know alot of people get faint/weak at the sight of blood and needles, so it seems like it could only add to the situation.

Say hello to being in the twenties... My dad has diabetes (hard to say if it was caused by his gang green gass foot infection, stress or both) and one of the times n the hospital (after we moved from ut to pa his sugars got all outta control due to the stress of moving people and cats) they were running him wrong for his diabetes (giving him food and then big shots of insulin) and he dropped down into the twenties. Now at twenty you pretty much shut down and if you live thru it you're lucky... he was at around twenty three... ghost white and showing all the same signs as you mentioned above... my oldest brother (6'3" and about 250lbs) almost punched out the head nurse for letting his sugars drop so low (when my father lost his foot my brother was his live in nurse and went thru all the steps about monitoring and controlling my dads blood sugar).
They got it mixed up on you or didn't clarify, what you list is a massive drop in blood sugar, this is Hypoglycemia (dizzyness, pale skin, tingling sensation, ect). Hyperglycemia (shortness of breath, fruity smelling breath, a very dry mouth, ect) is a dramatic rise or extreme high of the sugar level, this is the more common problem.. The good news was you were in the best place to have that crash happen (for my dad they gave him this mega chocolate peanut butter bar...)... |

I don't know what it tested. They didn't tell me. Thanks for clarifying that Black DX. They knew I was fine with having my blood drawn.

Low blood sugar sucks.... I've been diabetic for 22 years now... I've been as low as the high 20s. Not fun. You'd think that people in the ER would know to give you juice (or soda, like one person actually did). Crackers, peanut butter, carbs, etc take too long for the body to process into sugar. You're talking about half an hour for some of that stuff to kick in. Juice starts kicking in in less than 5 minutes.
Has this happened before? You should keep a few juice boxes, or cans of soda around from now on. They can stay unrefrigerated for quite a while, and a box (or can) or two will keep this from happening again. I keep 4 in my karate gear bag. Even when it drops pretty far pretty fast, two or three boxes fixes everything. Glad to hear you're OK, though. |

I've never had it happen like this before. One nurse gave me some milk while I was upstairs at my work area. I drank a lot of orange juice before I went to bed....about to drink some before I go.

I was waiting tables the other day and I saw a table freaking out. What happened was the same thing that happened to you but he just wanted to leave and they were having trouble trying to get him to drink or take a bloodsugar test. They finally got him to drink and he was back to normal. Scared the **** out of me.

standard procedure Moss....once they hook you up to an IV they have plenty of fluids running through you to get a blood draw....every patient who comes to the ER always has a Urine and Blood draw...the 4 tubes are for different tests...its standard practice... and for everyone on here who gets drunk/takes drugs and becomes combative and ends up going to the hospital...well thats when you get to meet people like myself...because the urine and blood draw are standard and EVERYONE gets them, regardless of what you say....We take it...and if you are combative and refuse...then we tie you to a bed and stick a catheter in...so just remember...be nice to hospital staff And glad to hear you were ok....it happens a lot at hospitals and offices...people work too hard and forget they have to watch themselves as well....glad to hear you were ok bro |

I didn't have to do a urine sample. Would have gladly done it if they requested it though. The doctor joked about a catheter though.

Hypoglycemia is a drop in blood glucose normally start acting funny around 50. Normally give apple juice to get it up. If they gave you an IV I would be if you were low enough they would give you Dextrose 50 its basicly IV suger. Iv'e picked up a Pt. that was at 10 after giving him a tube of oral glucose. Some Paramedics in our area had his glucose level read 0 at one point and was able to get him back. Normally a person would go in to a diabetic coma at that point but he has adapted after years of abuse to his body. Also that Fruity smell on the breath is called diabetic Ketoacidosis |

I got my results. Fasting blood sugar: 69. He said I'm not diabetic. wOOt. I also got a prescription to prevent migraines. wOOt
On a side note: I went to pizza hut last night. We sat down and ordered a meat lovers pizza, half without sausage because the fiance doesn't care for sausage on her pizza. They come and bring the wrong pizza, so we tell them. While sitting there, I feel my blood sugar dropping and I'm thinking, it will be next. I start feeling really bad, so I send the fiance to get me some orange juice at the gas station next door. We sit there an hour and a half and I have to get someone and tell him "Can I get some food? I've only been waiting an hour and a half." He says "Oh, I'll go get the manager" She comes, "this ones on the house blah blah blah blah" Sit there about 20 min, my fiance finds someone and tells them I need something to eat because my blood sugar has been dropping. Finally get some cheese breadsticks, I wolf those down. Finally, about 2 hours after we have been there, we get our food. Never going back there. |

Heh I had that type of "service" at a Chilies, never ate there again (ours was 3 hours and it was because a cook sliced his hand open, our waiter never said why the wait...).
Yea it's not fun to feel that sudden drop coming on... but worse when you're somewhere to eat and they're screwing you over... |

Never said why there was a wait, when someone sliced their hand open? Are you serious? Maybe because blood got all over food or equipment, maybe because the paramedics were called, maybe there are hundreds of other reason. The point you diss service because someone was injured, wow. I've never seen why people never go back to a restuarant because of a one time bad service experience. Hell I have had to wait hours for food at the Olive Garden before, but I will go back, because their food is **** awesome. If they have good food, I will wait. I could give a **** less how long it takes, if it is good, I will eat it, leave a tip, and come back for more good food. |

Hmm well i think that the least the waiter could have done was at least try to give some explanation as to why the food took so long. Diss the service because they plain just didn't give you any reason is def ok in my book.
And yes i can see not going back to the restaurant because of poor service. Half of the expierence of going out to eat is the service. If i wanted good food and wanted to wait a log time i would do it myself. But if i want good service and food then im going to a restaurant. I ate at BW3 and never went back. My food took two and a half hours and me and my brother we one of two table that had people there. Now i won't complain about the fact that it was free but still thats stupid. On another note im glad your doing ok man migraines suck total *** and its cool that you haven't had them. |

2 1/2 hours is wayyyy too long to wait. Even if he had chopped his head off it still should have been ready in less than that.
