Okay im 21 now so that mean i can buy a pistol. I want a 40 cal. for the simple fact or its bigger it has more take down power thus it can be used in deer hunting. I'm told the S&W Sigma is a very good gun but there is a police officer in our town that just got a Glock 40 cal. not sure what model but he loves it. I've heard mixed reviews on Glocks before i need opinions. Please dont say get a 50 cal or a 9mm (too big and too small.)

My issue pistol is a Glock model 22. It's their full-size .40. I've had no problems with it at all. Accurate and reliable.

I know that when the S&W Sigmas first came out, back in about 93 or 94, they had a LOT of problems. One guy I went through the academy with had one in .40, and was CONSTANTLY having malfunctions. MY opinion on this pistol is to avoid it like the plague.

As for hunting, I'm not too sure I'd want to use a .40 PISTOL. Or pretty much any other PISTOL, for that matter. This is just a wild guess, but it sounds like you're thinking of a semiautomatic pistol that you can use for BOTH hunting and concealed carry. That's the only circumstance I can think of for which such a compromise would be suited.

If you're not planning on carrying concealed, I'd suggest something you might not have thought of before: a heavy-duty .357 revolver with at least a 6-inch barrel.

.357, because it already has quite a reputation for both deer hunting and defense. Back in the 80's, a homicide detective conducted a study of the percentage of one-shot stops of various types of ammunition in actual shootings, and the .357 125 grain SJHP came in at a whopping 96 percent.

Heavy duty, because that enables you to feed it a steady diet of .357 instead of .38, and, more importantly, enables you to use the heavier bullets designed for hunting.

At least a 6-inch barrel, because that allows for two things important for hunting: higher velocity, and a longer sight radius for more precise aiming.

If the defensive use you have in mind is just HOME defense, the size of the handgun doesn't matter, because you don't need to conceal it or lug it around all day, every day.

If it IS to fill a CCW role, though, I'd suggest a 1911 pistol, in the full-size, 5-inch barrel, "Government" version, either in .45 ACP OR in .38 Super (which has ballistics very similar to .357).

(Or, you could buy two handguns.....one for hunting, and one for concealment, in which case I'd suggest a .357 or .44 revolver with an 8-inch barrel and a scope, and a mid-size pistol in .40 or .45)

Hope this helps.

The early S&W sigma's WERE trouble prone but those days are FAR FAR behind...
The early Glocks were probably MORE trouble prone when they first came out , I had one blow apart in my hand during live fire training ...
The Newer Sigma's are pretty much trouble free with proper care/cleaning and lubrication ...
We are issued a full size Sigma for duty use and many have bought the S&W detective specials for back up concealed carry weapons as they use the same clips ect ...
The only downside of the Smith 40 is it is a proprietary bullet so if you plan on lots of target shooting it can and will get pricey ...

I carry a .40 Springfield XD and love it. Most of my friends either carry a .40 or a .45. I don't know one person who hunts with a hand gun though. I'd probably suggest a .357 for hunting, or maybe something slightly bigger.

Most police officers get issued Glocks because they are reliable, accurate and need little maintanance and have low failure rate...which is exactly what you need...

I also like the Sig 226 or 229 for carry....accurate, come in .40 cal and dependable....I think most Federal Agencies use them as their standard issues sidearm as well...I know Homeland Security does.

I'm pretty sure it's Homeland Security, Marshals, and then maybe the SEALS.

We have 2x 226's in the house, and I love to shoot them I just wanted something comfortable to ride with
