I'm thinking it's the shifting metal sound heard in fast n the furious as well as several video games.... the only simple way to do this would either be a gated shift pattern or placing a metal strip at the front and back of the shifter so it hits the strip when you shift into the gears...

A shift kit is what is needed or also what they call a shift plate. But it also depends on your mods that you have on your tranny.

That sound of poor engagement? Just drain the gear lube and beat on for a little while. It'll clink.

or the sound of a metal shifter bushing installed with a short shifter, clanking around. the short shifter isnt necessary, but its coming off anyway when if install the bushings

It was a joke, I'm aware of the strictly ornamental sound of the metallic shift.

if you are talking about when you are sitting in the vehicle and can hear it...look into a short throw shifter...I had one on my stang and it was about 200 bucks, greatly improved shift quickness and the "clink" sound you hear is the safety plate so you can slam it into gear and not damage your tranny....its not really a sound thing, more of a performance improvement...Easy install, just make sure you have a set of ratchets or breaker bar, some Gasket Sealer (autozone etc) and you are good to go...

I got mine from Steeda (spec for mustangs though)
