I recently gave a speech on this subject to students at Sam Houston State. The response was a sea of dumbfounded faces and a few rolling eyes. The stupidity of people that create and impose gun contol laws make it difficult to make myself understood in words. Therefore, I will use a series of pictures.
....Gun owners: feel free to enjoy the pretty pictures too. interesting facts: - a study by Fox news 7 found that police response times to "priority 1" calls was USUALLY less than 10 minutes - Guns are used in self-defense about 2.5 million times a year… the equivalent of once every 13 seconds - Armed citizens shoot and kill at least twice as many criminals every year as do police (1,527 to 606) Most of these were while waiting on the police. |

But on a serious note...... *I agree with SickWitIt,*
That bottom gun looks WAY to dangerous to be in the hands of civilians........ |

I am always right, I'm surprised you picked up on that. Funny how the girl before I dated Lisa was Mexican, I must have turned into a white supremacist just after her. Grow up and answer the question if you want to have a debate. If not, then shut the **** up. |

If you "don't buy it", and expect to be taken seriously, show us some of your mad debating skilz and try arguing against my logical points. Go ahead. Prove me wrong. But I'll play along anyway, with your typical, cookie-cutter hoplophobe argument of "Assault weapons need to be illegal, because all they're good for is killing people." I refer you to the 2nd Amendment: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the People to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Read that carefully. It ain't about duck hunting. It's VERY MUCH about "killing people", if "necessary to the security of a free state". Now, where could a THREAT to "the security of a free state" come from? Well, it could come from either a foreign invader, or a domestic tyrant. Here's a hint: *conspiratorial whisper* - they'll be armed with "assault weapons". Therefore, so should be the "militia". Ah, but what IS the "militia"? Is it the National Guard? Well, since nobody has yet invented time travel, and the National Guard wouldn't be created for over 100 years after the 2nd Amendment was ratified, that can't be it. Is it the Army? Well, since the Constitution said that there would be no standing army, and that one could only be raised at such times as necessary (not for more than two years), I don't think that's what the Founding Fathers had in mind either. But maybe, just MAYBE, they were referring to the "militia" as defined later in the United States Code, which breaks it down into the "organized militia" and the "unorganized militia". The latter was described as consisting of "every able-bodied free male between the ages of 17 and 45, except for a few public officials". Of course, EVERYBODY's free NOW, and we no longer discriminate against folks on the basis of gender or age, either..... Ergo, the PEOPLE - you and I, and every other able-bodied American citizen - have a Constitutionally recognized RIGHT to possess all manner of "arms", up to and including the semiautomatic firearms that some nitwits call "assault weapons" because they don't know that REAL assault weapons are fully automatic. Here endeth the lesson. |

Regardless of my opinion, gun bans will never happen, for one reason: The american people won't allow it to happen.

Explain Clinton's gun ban in '94? That prevented law abiding citizens by buying certain types of guns. Just like austrailia..... ban guns, register them, destroy them...
Nice. I go through stage, sometimes I like the synthetic stock better, sometimes I like the wooden one better. And I love seeing police officers all about the 2nd amendment and againts any kind of gun bans! Power to you! |

Assault rifle ban was extremely smart. Citizens don't need machine guns for god's sake.

Wait, I'm in the military and I occasionally shoot an assault rifle. Should it be illegal for us to train with them or use them in combat should the need arise? What should we use? Slingshots?

Pick one of your sentences, or the other, then. Because the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 did absolutely NOTHING about "machine guns". It just banned a whole bunch of guns that LOOKED LIKE "machine guns". In 1995, and even today, any non-criminal, sane person can purchase a fully automatic firearm. All they have to do is fill out some paperwork, get fingerprinted, and pay the ATF their $200 tax. Then, about 6 months later, they'll pay well over $1000 for a 20 year old gun. Meanwhile, a criminal or insane person can just go talk to Julio, fork over about $500, and walk away 6 MINUTES later with a 10 year old full auto AK47 freshly smuggled across the border..... |

A short list of things that American citizens don't "need":
1) Cigarettes: they waste money, smell horrible and not only kill the user but kill the people around them twice as fast 2) Cars: nearly 50,000 people e year die in car accidents in the US because drivers can't pay attention to driving....never mind the drivers that DO pay attention. Therefore only the government should have motor vehicles. They'd ever have accidents because it would take a committee months to decide where to drive and by that time the battery would be dead. 3) Fast food: the leading cause of obesity and heart disease. Plus the stress from getting your rat-***** contaminated burger with the wrong toppings is sure to put you on the long list of people who need a transplant. 4) Alcohol: …. we already tried to ban that and it went so well that some people actally profited…(cough…The Kennedys). 5) Sex: Because pro-lifers claim that twice as many people die from abortions than heart disease (the nation’s leading cause of death to non-fetuses) Since many are to lazy to use ANY protection, sex should just be illegal and henceforth no-abortions. |

I didn't ready any of this thread until it hit 2 pages, then I had to come in and see what was going on. To me it seems like we have a lot of extremists in this thread (and on this board). Why don't you guys try and look at both sides of the story?
I can see why there should be a ban and why there shouldn't be. If I were to "lean" to one side or another right now, I would probably "lean" towards a ban. Why? Because I just don't see the reason/need (yes I have read all the reasons above) for the general population to have access to assault rifles and other high powered weapons. Oh, don't worry about trying to pick apart everything that I just said, because I will NOT reply in this thread again. |

The only people who want to ban guns, are people who don't own any.
Guns will never be banned, don't worry about it. |

I don't own a gun and don't see myself getting one anytime soon, but that doesn't mean I think they should be banned.
As has been said over and over, if you ban the guns from the good law abiding citizens then the only people that will have them are the criminals. If a bad person wants to kill someone they will, no matter what the means of getting the weapon. A good person will only kill in defense of themselves, family, or friends and is likely only going to get the gun through legal means. |

What would the difference of my cousin having an "assult rifle" or I, not in the military having an "assult" rifle aka a semi-auto rifle with a large capacity mag?
Glad to see you have some common sense |

While personally I have no desire to own an assault rifle, and think that it is more than slightly excessive, I also understand that there are those that enjoy them. Yes, the possibility for abuse/damage is there, but it isn't inherent in the tool and I should not force my own beliefs upon others.
It's like how it doesn't really matter if I am pro-Choice or pro-life, what matters is whether I feel justified in forcing my thoughts on the matter onto other people - I don't, so I allow them to choose. I don't feel I can force my beliefs that assault rifles and the like are excessive and shouldn't be allowed onto other people, so I will let them choose whether or not they fit the lifestyle, needs, and wants of those who buy them, provided that they are obtained legally, and there exist reasonable guidelines (like making sure the person isn't insane, etc.). |
