Wait wait wait... So it took them years to come out with Vista, and once Vista - an utter failure - is out for, what, a year? They have a new version already on the way? That sounds cool though.

And half the internet... You aren't a developer, that's the most pirated version, and most up to date version, that's all around the internet. TPB especially, but no linking to that from here.

Windows 7 Beta ISO leaked

So it's quite easily obtainable. For those who like that sort of thing... (Windows) biglaugh.gif

I haven't had a problem with it, but I haven't put it to the test yet... it works on the tabs principal... you only have one icon for each program, then within it you have each instance of that program for you to select from.

Great so far, anything that runs in Vista runs pretty much flawlessly in it... you will get the occasional "Your Operating system is not supported, please upgrade to XYZ", but that's to be expected, since it's not "official" yet. You can even solve that though through the compatibility options though.

And yes Kris, I know, I'm not a Developer, and it's very highly pirated... Sue me... I'm trying to keep the TPB links off here.

Even if you don't... I think this will bring more life back into microsoft

OS X > Windows :D

Don't mind me, I just like starting ****. On a more serious note, I think Vista and now Windows 7 have a much improved UI, but the hardware requirements are so much higher it's ridiculous. There's no way my older PC (1.8ghz + 2gig ram) could run the newer Microsoft operating systems.

In the future when I finally upgrade my PC, I look forward to tinkering with the current Windows system.

Yeah but what do you do with your laptop? I run multiple web design-related programs, sync my iPhone, listen to music or watch a DVD, instant messenger, a couple other geeky background programs, etc. Basically, a lot of stuff that likes to eat up memory and processes. I don't need my operating system for that, I can do it myself icon_biggrin.gif

Aken... I think you'd be able to run this on your old computer... the OS itself only pulls around 400Mb of ram and nearly no CPU at idle... so while it might not be fast, it'd run just fine... unlike vista which was such a resource hog that if you didn't have 2GB of ram and a dual core processor you weren't going anywhere fast.

I haven't gotten around to putting enough of my everyday use programs to be able to do much with it.... but my current box that this is on only has a gig of ram and single core celeron processor. So I dunno if I want to make this my primary computer or not. We'll see how it runs.

The problem is that I multi task differently. Especially at work when I constantly have to pause what I'm working on and start something else, I have 3 or 4 Firefox instances open at once, each full of tabs. I use the different firefox instances like a new group of tabs (one may be development, another customer contact, and another may be website monitoring or something). If all of the instances use the same icon, I can't tell them apart. Currently I can tell them apart by the website titles...

OS X is just as bad or worse when it comes to OS upgrades. Usually when they release a new version, your old hardware won't run it and you have to get a new computer -- not just upgrade your RAM. There's no way a 4 year old computer is going to run the latest and greatest (okay, maybe greatest is a stretch in this case)

Brandon, check this out... you can still keep your stuff separated... here's a series of screenshots showing how it works.

Note: all pictures are clickable leading to full-scale versions.

Screen 1
Desktop with 3 Firefox instances running, each with 2 tabs.
User posted image

As you can see, there's only one Firefox logo with no words, but you can see the 3 little "tab" looking things underneath it... This tells you that you have more than one instance.

Screen2

User posted image

When you click or hover over the Firefox stack, this menu pops up and shows you all the instances of that particular service.

Screen3

User posted image

Then when you move your mouse up to hover over the previewed images, the window brings itself to the front, as a fullsize "preview" of the window. By clicking on the small scale preview, you make that window come to the front permanently, and have done it all without all the text in the taskbar.

As I see it, there are advantages and disadvantages to this process.

Advantages: No combersome text in the taskbar, and a clean, polished and organized look regardless of how many programs and windows you have open.

Disadvantages: A 2-click process rather than a single click to open a program that has more than one instance.

Please tell me Windows 7 includes a wallpaper rotator? I've been looking for something that'll rotate wallpaper images that are inside a selected folder that doesn't take up too much memory. It'd be nice if the new OS came with something like that. It would be a nice feature, not necessary, but nice.

I think it looks pretty cool. I wouldn't mind tinkering with it. I don't like vista really but I don't hate it. It isn't bad for how little I do on my computer. But like aken said I don't like how I had to install extra ram just to get it to run at a decent speed.

I wouldn't mind giving it a shot.

Not to bash OSX or anything, but trying running the newest leopard on a gig of ram and a old processor. It is not going to do so great either..... New OS = New hardware requirements.

I'll give it a go and see how I like it I guess. Unfortunately, it reminds me of Mystery Meat Navigation

I said it mainly just to be a **** with the Mac vs. PC subject icon_biggrin.gif I don't doubt any OS has it's preferences as far as hardware is concerned.

It does, and that's why the background is always different... I'm on a 30 sec rotate right now through some of the included wallpapers...

I haven't really put any media on this computer yet, so that's probably why I haven't noticed/used it. The sharing is much nicer now than in previous versions of windows... I used to always have problems sharing music over a LAN, but this did it almost completely automatically.

I can't remember the official term they are using and I'm too tired to look it up, but you can rightclick on the icon in your superbar and control programs. Windows Media Player (WMP) is one of the programs that I know of that already supports this feature. I would imagine its the equivalent of rightclicking the iTunes icon in your system tray

Well... it seems to work fine, although it's hard for me to test it, since I don't have any media on this box yet.

it doesn't actually pull up the full media player... just a small version that has the basic commands... it seems slick, but I can't say for sure.

seems like it is what they wanted Vista to be. Running it in VMware on my macbook pro and seems a lot better than vista. I've been hearly mainly positive remarks about it so far from the majority of review.

The Vista core is supposed to be solid. Ignoring the driver problems that Microsoft blames on the developers, it is hands down the most secure Windows ever. If they can fix the resources issue and address some usability "issues" I think they'll do well with the new OS.

I've grown to accept Vista, so I won't have any issues upgrading to Windows 7 when it's stable.

Not a whole lot different in 7, but there are some subtle differences which are nice.
