I'm looking into getting my ham license, but currently I host an online scanner out of my home for a local website that a friend of mine runs.
last year during the bad fires in northern california the page received something like 60,000 hits in a day. www.thenet411.net
And just so you know, yes they can triangulate your position and find out where you're broadcasting from, and yes they do monitor for people that break the rules... it's alot cheaper to get your ham license and go by the rules then get fined by the FCC.
also, check out www.eham.com
