You could change the final drive gear.

Its not hard to do, but that all depends on your skill level and what you define as expensive.

Sorry, but your RPM at a given speed in a given gear doesn't just happen to change. It's simply a gear ratio. Given the engine RMP and all the ratio's one can determine their speed. I'm willing to bet that you were in 3rd and not in 5th.

The clutch could be slipping to cause this to happen. If it is, you should smell a bad, burnt odor.

Chevy made a pushrod engine that can handle 8500rpm.

I would bet you were in third gear as the RPM would not change based on the day.

If you are looking for a higher top speed and sacrifice power off the line then gear down./

If you want more power off the line and a lower top speed (ie higher RPM on freeway) then gear up to a higher gear ratio icon_wink.gif

Your civic should not do 5K rpm at 6500 unless someone has put in a higher gear in the car before you got it.

That's the engine I'm talking about. The LS7 (which is in C6 Z06) has been tested up to 8500 rpm (no power up there due to cam and intake). That's a lot of rpm's for a BIG V8 and not a little 4 banger.
