I have an amp that is putting out 200 watts RMS and I am debating on upgrading my sub to either a kicker or infinity or JL Audio....My question is which of the three would sound best....I already have a box that fits within the volume specs of the subs and I know the amp will be able to power the sub just fine....I just want to get the best sub for the money....

well, if i was you i'd use the Xplod you have now for some small speakers instead of a sub

Id take a mono (as you suggested), and use

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_098CO5001/Orion-Cobalt-CO500-1.html?tp=115

and this single sub

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107MM2154D/Polk-Au...p=111&tab=features_and_specs

as for brand names go, the tag doesn't add power, take the tag off THEN see what you got

"Sound best" is a VERY generic statement. What sounds great to one person might not sound great to another person. Everyone has a different opinion and taste on what they want to hear. You need to let us know what type of music you listen to. Are you simply wanting louder or better quality?

Some basic questions need to be answered before you can get a halfway decent answer.

I want better quality....I have an xplod p5 series sub right now and at times the sub just sounds somewhat distorted....I mostly listen to hip hop and rock....I want a sub that will hit hard and sound clean for now.....Also i'm not worried about brand names...I am just trying to find a better sub than what I already have....

I had diamond audio. Got their 10 inch D1 for 75 bucks out the door at custom audio.

They are amazing and have locations around here.

Let me know. I LOVED it. Competition sub hit clean on hip hop, rock techno the works. Looks good. All around a good sub IMHO hit hard for a small 10 too.

Amp was 300 originally and the subs were 120 each.

so 1/2 that at max more then likely.

Can you imagine the charge for me to bring these down there lol. I keed I keed. icon_razz.gif

Of course it isn't set in stone that I am going to sell it just quite yet. That way were on the same page here.

I have to graduate college in 10 days then I will have time, and more time to do something. I have to finish a 60 day math course in 7 days.

you don't need to spend alot to get a good sound. like you i listen to rock and hip hop mostly, if you want clean hard hitting tight bass, your gonna want 10 or 12 in a sealed box (10 will be tighter). don't think 12 is louder because it's bigger, it's a psycholigical thing that you will think its louder if people tell you, it's not really that much louder. Don't only think about the sub, a well designed box with a with a crappy sub could sound way better then a poorly/prefabbed built box with a higher end sub.

Sub size doesn't impact how loud it is. There's already a measurement given for that......sensitivity.

This is a psychological myth as well.

What they said =P Just make sure you don't cheap out on the amp. Get an amp that truly can drive whatever sub you get. Subs are cheap. Amps aren't. You get a nice sub because you get a really good deal on it.. the amp will cost you 5 times as much to power it.

Sony Xplod is junk. Stay away from it in the future when buying amps. Look at brands like Alpine or MTX, as they typically list their power output in RMS. All of the no-name brand amps typically list their power in "Peak", rather than "RMS". The difference is "Peak" is what your amp can handle in short bursts (for a half second here, a second there). "RMS" is what the amp can deliver continuously. Typically, RMS is 1/2 to 1/4 of what your Peak is, especially on cheap amps. So if your amp is a Sony Xplod 1000w, it's probably more realistically a 250w amp RMS. Don't worry about matching peak amp with peak sub. Focus on RMS amp to RMS sub.

Also remember that the lower the impedance on a sub, the more expensive the amp will be to drive the sub at that low of an impedence. So if you get a sub that's 500w 1ohm, the amp for that will be a whole lot more expensive than if you got a 500w 4ohm sub.

I have a 12" 300w sub in an undersized enclosure (basically means the enclosure will cause a lot less bass output), and I'm only driving the sub half as hard as it can be driven. In essense, I'm getting about 1/4 of the output from the sub than it has potential to put out, and it's still more than enough for my application with all high end, high output speakers. If you're using your stock speakers, you can't get your speakers anywhere near the volume I can get mine, with clarity, and yet I still have more than enough bass to compensate for the volume, so think small, and you'll get affordable. Stay away from subs like JL 1000w RMS subs, unless you want to make it a money pit. Those subs are nice, but they are power hungry and will want a $500+ amp to drive them.

thanks to everyone for all the input....I got the sony amp for dirt cheap and probably will keep it just to power the 6.5" and 6x9's for now......thanks again to everyone...

Dude, no offense... but there are people out there strugglying to keep a roof over their head.. you're getting a "Financial Aid" check to help with real bills, and you're looking into upgrading your un-necessary sound system...

I hate that crap.. people can live on HUD in houses, while others are working crappy jobs for minimum wage, trying to make it by, can barely afford an appt.. if you're on gov financial assistance programs, why should they assist you with a house while those who earn their living and don't get help from others can't afford a house? Ass backards system... Good luck with your government purchased sound system.

No offense, but maybe you should understand a persons situation before talking ****.

I for one know that every bit of "assistance" the dusty gets goes back to him finishing school. He does have a job that pays for what his assistance doesn't and then every now and then he saves enough to do something "special."

He has been saving and planning an upgrade for months. He will not have a "government purchased sound system."
