Would I have to retrofit my aftermarket projector headlights, in order to put a HID conversion kit?

It depends on the type of projectors used .... the cheaper Depo type plastic ones can melt with a high wattage HID kit ... IF you have plastic projectors I'd recomend a MAXIMUM 35 Watt bulb

Well i have depos in my car, and I've been running hid in them for about a year and they are fine! the light output is better but still not as good as a real HID projectors. If you have the money to retrofit, i would say do it, you will be amazed at the difference!
Make sure that there is not a lot of glare. Some aftermarket projectors are chrome and they tend to give glare with HID's or their cut off is not shaped correctly, like this _/ and they are supposed to be like this _/-

The cutoff is from the headlight itself. The glare is coming from improper installation because people dont cover squirrel spotters.
