My cavalier has broken down 3 times in 2 months now, so I'm getting something new. Considering a g6, this one in particular:

http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp;jsessi...nding%7cZ-42055&aff=national

If anyone can share any experiences with a G6, it'd be a help, especially in areas of:

1. How much to insure?
2. Reliability/ease/cost of repairs (I don't know much to fix things myself)
3. Road noise (my cavalier I can't even make a phone call while driving)
4. Ease of modifications (audio & lighting mainly)

I was also considering a cobalt, but they're about the same price and the G6 seems to be a nicer car for the same money, even though the cobalt gets a few MPG better.

Thanks for the help!

From family and personal experiences...

chevy lasts longer than pontiac...

g6 more space than a cobalt...

kinda preferance... can't find any crash test ratings to compare... still searching

My mom has a G6. Its got a lot of room on the inside. Road noise isn't too bad. I can't comment on anything else you ask about, as I have no clue.

that price is horrible.
I got a 2008 g6 gt with 20k miles for 14,500.... this was about 7-8 months ago.
And now with pontiac down for the count you should be able to get a couple grand off...

Ive driven a few... There ok.. its a small step up from a cavy. The one your looking at is overpriced IMO, its base and its a Pontiac so your buying into a dying breed so dont expect too much support in the future. As far as insurance you have to ask for yourself, call and get a quote its free. everyone is different so its one of those questions we cant answer for you.

Keep your options open and check out some other cars.

Mazda 3- driven two, there nice except there alittle on the small side, but your coming from a cavy so you might not notice.

Chevy Cobolt- room mate has one, its actually quite nice for the price except the turn signals makes a annoying dinging noise when its on. I prefer the 4dr to the two door, two doors have a high rear seat like a neon which makes seeing behind you alittle difficult at times (like backing up against another car), its alittle hard to tell distance.

If you can find a Corolla, camry or Accord in your price range with low miles they are worth looking at too.

Okay, since everyone's giving suggestions as to other types of cars, I'll list up a few of my criteria of what I'm looking for.

MUST be a 4 door, 4 cylinder car. I can't stand 2 door, and I want something good on gas. These two conditions would also make it cheaper to insure.

At least as good on gas as my cavy (26-28mpg)

I wouldn't mind something a bit bigger than the cavy, which is a big factor in my looking into the G6 compared to a cobalt

reliable (and I'm aware that most any new car, if maintained, will run basically forever), and cheap to fix when it does break down. I've heard that foreign cars are a lot more expensive to repair, which is why I was looking into GM stuff. not sure what effect their bankruptcy will have on me, isn't that just a reorganization sorta thing, and not a "we're closing all our shops and wont be making replacement parts anymore" one?

check out the Mazda 3, the wife has an 07, very very reliable, respectably quick, looks good enough, stereo sounds sweet for stock and has aux jack

honestly I have never really seen a cost benefit vrs American made or foreign made costings that much more?

I have owned nothing but german cars really and honestly my fuel pump to an american is practically the same cost... my relay $10 your relay 8...

You seem like a do-it-yourself type...

Look at it this way.. What cars do you see on the road the most long term? What cars do you see on the side of the road? You don't see many hondas sitting on the side of the road now do you? or vws, or bmws...

I will say there is one technically American car that I can't wait to see released and its all thanks to FIAT owning Chyrsler now. In short even if they stick an SRT4 badge on it I'd still rock a FIAT 500 Abarth SS. As Jeremy Clarkson put it 170hp in a car the size of a shoe, its the same concept as what they did with the MINI S except its cheaper and more enjoyable to drive

Fair enough. I wish i could DIY more, but on the Cavalier, the most i've done is swap out the alternator, which is VERY easily accessible. I wish I could learn cars better icon_sad.gif

Thoughts on the Ford Fusion? It's bigger than the G6, and Ive found several on cars.com with under 40k miles in the $12-16k price range.

I say whatever ytou buy you should honestly go drive each car...drive it push the gas stop... get a feel for it...

I did that to the BMW, the Benz, and Jags when I was making my choice... I wanted a sprots car back in the 90s... and then fell in love with the m3 and kinda am stuck in the 90s hahahahaha

I sweat I want to buy some hammer pants and pull up in a prestine m3 straight out off the pages of the 95 playboy magazine ehehe

The G6 is sweet. It has like 250hp out of a 3.5L? it goes pretty good. The G5 is a cavalier/cobalt.

I'm looking at the 4 cylinder version, 2.4L, 164hp.

And yes, I'll definitely test drive anything before I commit to buying one, but the Chevy/Pontiac dealer is 20 minutes one direction, Ford is 40 or 60 miles depending on if I go to Murray or Clarksville, ditto for toyota/madza (which the mazda3 looks REALLY small inside, it has I think 4 cubic feet less room than the fusion). So I'm trying to narrow down what all I will need to test drive to minimize my legwork (especially being that my car is down for the count again and I'll have to take moms car to go anywhere).

dude you live in Kentucky buy a used MKV rabbit, the company that makes all the bad ass tuning parts for it is right in your back yard, seen used 06 and 07 2 doors going for under 12k. You'd totally fall in love with the inline 5cyl as well. Heh I went from a 2003 Cavalier to an 07 rabbit in 06 and well to say the least it made me a European car fanatic.

My former step dad had a 2007 G6 GTP, 2 door 6 speed. I personally loved it the few times i drove it. Rode and drove smooth, low road noise. Really a nice car.

Thanks everyone icon_smile.gif I still think I'm leaning toward the Fusion at this point. I'm going to call my insurance co in the morning and get a quote for the G6, Fusion 4 cylinder and Fusion 6 cylinder, then go test drive a Fusion. If I dislike it, I'll try the G6.

alka, if you can find at least one acura tl to drive...

My girl I am talking to has one and it is really an amazing car for the money. the interior is roomy, the design, it just makes the ford/pontiac cars look cheap from the pictures I have seen of the fusions and g6s...

I dunno why but for some reason her car has really turned me on hehehe I dunno it may just be her... haha

TL's are very nice cars... Also, pllllease check for B6 model Audi A4's. Sure they're a couple of generations older, but if you find a clean one, they are immaculate, classy, and quick... Look for the body style in my profile

Dunno how long that link will stay active, but that's what I'm getting. Test drove the G6 and that today, LOVED the fusion. Much roomier than the G6. Going back Friday to finalize the pricing (I didn't have a check stub today, and the financing guy is off tomorrow), discuss extended warranty options, etc, then I get to bring it home.

I've noticed that it'll be the first Fusion in the Oz galleries icon_smile.gif

The Fusion is a nice car for the money. You'll be happy with it for a long time.
