First time to ever fire a gun. I sucked it up, but dad did good. I had 4/29 that hit the paper and dad 19/21. Pretty good for dad who has not shot in 18 years.

Def gonna start gettin into this!

Not bad for a first time out... icon_smile.gif What were you shooting? Looks like 9mm?

Before you go next time, print a few of these out: http://www.tackdriver.com/pix0703/correction.jpg

It can help you get a better understanding of your groupings and why shots are going where they are.

Yeah it was a 9mm, and sweet! Thanks. I'll be sure to take a few. That was the most fun I have had in a while.

dont get a glock....especially in 9MM.

If you are looking for a good gun look at the Sig Sauer P229 or a XD/XD subcompact in the 9MM double stack option.

keep shooting and you will get better...the nice thing is I shoot for free at the range, just have to pay for ammo which is expensive. Now that you have shot a 9MM, go out and shoot a .45ACP icon_wink.gif

We have to qual every 6 months for PD...36 rounds for our sidearm qual at different yardage, timed and you have to draw your weapon...and can't throw any rounds, all must be on the paper and within a certain range to make the mandatory minimum points to stay firearms certified.

You should be happy with yourself...Im a firm believer that everyone should know how to use a gun. Not for shooting, but in case they ever come across one they know how to clear it. Would cut down on these idiots who keep shooting themselves.

I would like to know as well. I have both a Glock 26 and XD subcompact. While bother are GREAT guns, I honestly prefer the Glock. There are a couple reasons but the biggest reason is that it fits my hand the best. I also like the fact that there are TONS of Glock parts that are VERY easy to find. Also, the Glock is much easier to tear down and put back together.

But the main reason I like the Glock is because it fits my hand the best. You wouldn't go wrong with either gun, hence why I have both of them. icon_biggrin.gif

Go to gun stores and check out as many handguns as possible (one at a time, of course). See how they fit your hand. See how easy it is to reach the controls on each one. Find out what just feels "right".

Once you've found your top ten or five or whatever, Google is your friend. Search for information, preferably from people who actually OWN those guns. If there's a web forum dedicated to guns from that manufacturer (and there almost always is), go there and see what people have to say about the model you're wondering about. What you're looking for is information about reliability. If you see lots of people posting about how THEIR gun broke, you might want to cross that one off your list.

Once you've eliminated the stinkers, see if you can actually FIRE those guns that remain on your list at a range. Some ranges actually rent guns for use on the premises. Beyond that, some shooters are perfectly willing to let someone fire a few rounds through their gun if they're looking to buy one - especially if you'll use your own (quality) ammo.

I'm a big fan of the .45, and I shoot well with it.

....and that's the key, right there. You want the most powerful caliber you can shoot WELL with. If that's a .45, great! But if you shoot well with a 9mm, but not nearly as well with a .45, you should stick with the 9mm.

Everybody has their preferences. I worship at the altar of John Moses Browning, myself, and consider plastic guns to be heresy. Also handguns the caliber of which does not begin with "4". That being said, I can't argue against the PROVEN reliability, durability, and accuracy of Glock pistols. I just don't LIKE them. They fit my hand poorly, they're ugly, and their mother dresses them funny. But I wouldn't feel undergunned with a Glock in my hand if push came to shove, as long as it was a .45, .40 or 10mm. With really, REALLY good ammunition, I might even retain some hope for survival if it was a 9mm.

What I'm telling you is that you should figure out for yourself what works best for you, and hopefully my suggestions will help you do that.

I'm sure you gun fans have already seen this, but for those that have not, I think it is kind of impressive:

One word of warning about Glocks:

You cannot disassemble them for cleaning without pulling the trigger. You must therefore check, doublecheck, triplecheck and quadruplecheck to be absotively, posilutely, 100% doubleplus sure that the damn thing DOESN'T have a round in the chamber before you go to take it apart.

I want to add to McCook's post.

You need to determine what you're primary use is for the gun. Is it for carrying or just to go out and shoot?
I have both .45 and 9mm handguns. I can shoot both but the 9mm is cheaper to shoot. I have it to take to the range and just shoot all day w/out burning my bank account. But at the same time, a 9mm wouldn't be my first choice for carrying.

I can see what you mean, and I'm not gonna start carryin till after I get outta college, as I'm pretty sure the school would not like me having a firearm on campus. I'm thinking I'm just gonna get a 9mm to go out and shoot, and when I decide it's time to carry I'll pick up something I big bigger/better.

We were issued the early Glocks for Duty purposes , and I personally hated them ... They didn't feel right in my hand , didn't operate very well , prone to jamming , had one officers barrel blow up , kind of like the cartoons ...Later models supposedly overcame the shortcomings we had... I think we had them for a year then went to S&W 40's Overall a much better gun IMO Althought the Ammo is a bit pricey ... I keep a 9mm around for range practice (same frame/feel) and the 40's reserved for special occasions

Quoted for accuracy. You can't go wrong with a good 1911.

I personnally have an XD-45 and continue to prefer it over the Glocks that I've shot. I look at it much like the depate between XBox and PS3. Each has their pros and cons, as well as a groupie following. Just find what you like, can shoot accurately, and handle safely. icon_wink.gif

Nah. Doublechecking is usually enough for a pistol that isn't designed to **** where it eats.

That makes a lot of sense. 9mm is fairly cheap, so you can shoot more, getting lots of practice along the way.

You might even consider just getting a .22 pistol for that very reason.

The mechanics of sight alignment and trigger control don't change from one gun to another, or one caliber to another.

MCcook is correct..older glocks you must compress the trigger to get the slide off to field strip it and clean it...

I personally think they are ugly, fit hands poorly and dont like the fact you have to pull the trigger to field strip it....also Ive heard from buddies they have had malfunctions with ejecting cartridges druing hot fire scenarios.

I carry a .45 on duty....for off duty I carry a 9MM subcompact usually....hard to find a good .40 or .45 that is easy to conceal with shorts/short sleeves in summer time. Plus off duty I dont tend to carry extra magazines with me...so I like having a double stack option with 10+ rounds depending on what I am carrying.
