can you get a clean look if you use shake cans of primer to primer a car instead of using a spray gun?
im gonnna primer my car next weekend but i dont have a spray gun or anything so thats why i was asking if using the cans of primer you get from autozone or something would still look good. oh and do i have to sand off all the original paint first? or do i just spray right over it? any help is good. thnx. |

Prep is key ...You will need to get rid of all the wax there are tons of preps to use I'd wipe down the entire car, lightly sand the entire car and rewipe it down ..
It's tough to get a great smooth job with cans , it can be done but it's a lot of work , light coats same direction followed by light coats the opposite direction (crosshatched)..sometimes a light sand between coats will help... If you want a better job go buy a cheap spray gun (harbor freight sells them for $30) |

Skip the rattle cans, pick up a $20 harbor freight gun. I've been using one to shoot primer this summer and it works "good enough" for primer. You're going to end up sanding it before you shoot the base/clear anyways, so it doesn't have to be perfect.
But yea.. shoot with a real spray gun, you'll be happier I think. As for prep, you're gonna need to sand the entire car. You don't need to sand the paint off, it you don't want to.. Just make sure to sand the ENTIRE thing verrrry well. Remove any molding/ chrome/ window stripping/ belt moldings that you can, too. The more trim you remove the less things you have to mask, and the less the chance of the paint peeling where the masking line was. If you can't remove the trim for some reason, make sure to sand all the way up to it... I mean like slide the sand paper under neat it if you have to. Nothing's worse than paint lifting up because you didn't sand it good enough. Best of luck |
