lead-free solder strikes again!... from what I've read, replacing the mounting points from clips to bolts, applying new thermal paste (must be non metalic in flavor) and then improving the rear fans is the key to fix the damned things... Also swapping the heat sinks out for better models seems to be a great plan when under the hood...

This ofcourse is all AFTER the warranty is null-void... I figure let crap-ro-soft fix the damned thing first, then improve the ******* after...

I had the RROD twice (two different times I had to send it back to MS in a coffin) before I built my cooling stand. *knock on wood* I've been going strong ever since then.

^^^
I took out my stock fans and that "cooling duct" from inside the xbox. Put it on a stand with some fans built into it, two 140mm fan pushing air, and two 140mm fans pulling air.

Things ice cold all the time. Never red rings (for heat) anymore.

Nice idea. If I get another 360 I'll get some 140mm fans also.

why does someone always turn these threads into a 360 vs PS3 debate? That's now where this one will go.

UPDATE---
well I have an OG 360
it was made in January 2006.
It is 1.5 months out of warranty.
I'm really frustrated as this is obviously a real issue but no one seems to care with the people i talk to online and on the phone.
they want $100 to fix it
:(

Well...time to fix it yourself, and mod it while you're at it. Google it, it's easy.

I did the towel trick on both of my previous ones, one worked for a couple weeks before I had to do it again, and one lasted for a couple months before I had to do it again. Eventually, they completely die.

Yeah towel trick is very temporary, probably a couple week fix max.

I would say if you dont want to do it yourself, defiantly take a look on Craigslist for people who can do it for you, I've seen people only asking $20 to fix the RROD. icon_smile.gif

I thought the RRODs were a thing of the past. I got it on my first 360, but my 2nd one has been going strong.

I'm gunna be swapping mine with my little sisters soon as I found out she's got an HDMI port on hers. angel.gif

The newer Jasper xbox's have solved most of the heat related RROD.

Don't pay $100. Find someone local that can do it. I am not sure what it involves, but the word reflow is usually involved in the better ads on my local craigslist.

welp, i certainly didnt mean it to become a ps3 vs xbox war, i was just pointing out that regardless of quality of game play and games available and expanded uses, PS3 just dont have a red ring o death icon_smile.gif

It needs the extra heatsink that microsoft puts in it.

When I got mine back I put it on a fan that lays flat and I put the fan on high.

My buddies freezes up all the time, His heatsink doesnt work, so he just runs a Small wallplug fan behind his xbox to help the stock fans out and It doesnt hang/freeze anymore.

The materials MS used is ineferior when it comes to the paremeters that are required for the heatsink/GPU combo to not fail and is the crappy solder that they used creating a heating overload. if you can jjust properly cool it externally and get it to boot up you should be ook, this does mean though putting fans on the outside of it and making sure that air is getting in the box so you can remove the heat.
