I am thinking about doing a car PC. I have read up on some of the other topics and they didn't quite answer my questions I have.
Is it easy to do? Price range? If I wanted to could I just use any PC parts or does it have to be specific pc parts? What do I all need for parts? Was it worth it? |

1. Depends on your knowledge of building and maintaining a pc and in car wiring. There is alot in the planning and development that needs to be done before deploying. 2. Sky is the limit but bare minimum is: i)pc itself ii) vga touchscreen iii) gps reciever 3. Again, it depends on what parts you get and how you want it to be set up. I have all regular run of the mill desktop parts for mine, but most people go for the smaller form factors. 4.) see answer to question 2. 5.) depends on when you ask me ;) I've had the carpc for over 4 years and will NEVER go back. Love her when she works perfectly, and when she doesn't, that is when the tinker in me gets to play around with it. If you are looking for some thing low maintenance, look for a pre-built and configured system (www.mp3car.com). The front-end you choose comes down to personal preference really and whether or not you want it maintenance free as well. Riderunner (formerly roadrunner) is very labour/tweak intensive, but is also much more configurable/customizable. I recently made the switch to centrafuse given that if you purchase the current version now, you get the new version for free when it is released (search youtube for centrafuse 3 sneak peek). |

I been doing reading, not for the purpose of a car pc but rather a home pc server for multiuse and i came across this.
MINI-ITX boards. They ar very small boards which house the atom cores as well as some other cores but some things just dont require alot of cpu power. These things are tiny, the boards are about 7" x 7". These are good for car CPU's IMO because they are cheap, easy to get good cpu/mobo combos, customizable cases, and you can build it yourself and couple it with a Car PC case. More than this as far as car pc apps go i dont know, i just thought this kinda info would help. peep this link, i think itll be helpful to you alot. As far as op system goes and programs i suppose the sky is the limit if you can write stuff yourself but as far coupling programs with op systems, preference is yours, do some searching. http://www.itxdepot.com/xcart/home.php?cat=31100 |
