Never been to college, but I will say that it is never a good idea to stack 5 mattresses and jump onto them from the 3rd story. icon_wink.gif

Edit: Especially if there are copious amounts of alcohol involved....

Also a bad idea to mix acetone and loads of styrofoam, spell something out with the resulting goo in the parking lot, and then light it on fire. Will burn for about an hour and will still be there 5 years later...Also fog fluid is highly, highly flammable, despite what it says on the bottle.

But really, best advice I can give you is to do something outside of classes that is organized, whether that is intramural sports, student council, or some sort of group - most colleges have a group for anything you can think of pretty much. Let's you meet people outside of your major/dorm, and gives you something to do at a specific time each week - that was key for me to help with scheduling.

Learn which classes you have to go to and which you don't.

Make friends with every TA you can.

Use office hours and get to know professors - they will cut you more slack, and will help you out. If they know your name when giving you a grade at the end of a semester, much more likely to get a better grade. Also helps a lot when trying to get jobs/internships/etc...

I'm sure there's more, but those are some practical things I didn't know at first....

Buy a folding beer pong table. It's useful for more than just drinking.

I disagree. Keeping up and fully understanding the homework is the best thing you can do to keep grades up.

Meeting with TA's and Professors is pretty much the best way to keep up and understand. I wouldn't want to go meet with a professor not having done or attempted the homework, and anything I don't know perfectly gets clarified then. I think if you force yourself to go see professors/ta's not only are you keeping up with the work, you are building a relationship then can help you out in the long run.

O pennies. If you stick enough of them on the top and bottom of a door lock it will prevent it from opening. One night we got bored and did this to the guys next to us. The next morning we were woken up at 7:00am when he was banging on his door trying to get out because he had an 8am class. I strongly recommend you do that to someone farther down the hall....

Put saran wrap over the dorm commode and sit back and enjoy, but make sure the janitors do not have to clean a lot of stuff up or they will find you....Kool-Aid in the shower heads was also a good one....

GO TO CLASS. I can't stress that enough. Fun comes easy in college. Make sure you go to school and that fun lasts longer. Take from a man with experience.....

^ Yes and no - go for the first week or two to every class, and then decide if you have to go to every one from then on. There were some classes that I had to go to all of them, some that I could take a day or two off a week if I wanted to without any loss. One class that told us the very first day that I could either read the chapters or come to class, no need to do both..and he was right - went to that class a total of 4 times.

^^^ Agreed. I took a business stats course that did not require attendance. I showed up for the exam review days and the exams. Got an A in the class (I had already taken 2 actual stats classes, but I was required to also take business stats to take some classes I wanted to take in the business school).

Just be sure attendance is OPTIONAL. I made the mistake of thinking all of my discussions were optional, so I didn't go to any for my Pre-1914 British Literature course. Two weeks before the final the TA e-mails me and asks if I thought I was doing well in the course. I said yes (I had gotten B's B-C's on all my exams / papers the entire semester and I am horrible in English, so a B-C was acceptable to me). He tells me I currently have an F because of how many discussions I missed. Had to rewrite 2 papers and write an entirely new paper to get my grade up to a C. Talk about a lot of extra stress during finals....

I've done that one before.

Also: take ketchup or hot sauce pakets and stomp them while half under someone's door; get into someone's room and put some nasty fish on their thermostat; steal someone's clothes while they are in the communal shower (done to me multiple times and thank god for pizza boxes everywhere).

More good advice: Don't try to sneak 6 cases of beer past security in only two laundry baskets. IT WILL NOT WORK. That was probably my dumbest move in college.

I finished my undergrad with a 3.89 GPA and did it by showing up to class, doing my assignments, and most importantly, being smart. :p
