Hi everyone I'm new to this site and I'm looking at doing some LED Ribbon Lights on my stairs in my house. The stairs make a 90 degree turn and the way the two steps go around the turn I cant use the ribbon like on the turn. I still would like to get some like on the corner and was looking at the LED Flood light. Here is the link http://www.oznium.com/home-led-flood-light I was wondering if these floods could be dimmed with this product http://www.oznium.com/rotary-dimmer Hopefully you guys would know. Also here is a link to the ribbon lights I'm looking at using http://www.oznium.com/home-led-strip-ribbon Do you think that those would work well enough to light up the stairs or do you think I should look at the Tri Chip Ribbon LED http://www.oznium.com/bright-flexible-led-ribbon-strips
Thanks for the help in advance. If you have any questions for what I'm trying to do let me know. If you want I can also post pictures of the stairs so you guys get a better idea. Thanks. |

I don't really see why the products you have listed wouldn't work together. Looks like a great idea for your particular install. Good Luck with it.

The Flood light is the only product that may have some issues dimming. It'll dim slightly, but not the full range like all our other LED products will.
I don't see why the ribbon won't be able to make the turn. Perhaps a photo of the stairs and I can advise how to make it work. |

I'm with Phil on this one. Get us a pic of stairs and maybe we can get you hooked up.

Here are some pictures I took for you guys.
This is the top of the stairway.
Here is where I was thinking to mount the LED ribbon.
Here is the 90 degree bend.
Here is the bottom of the stairway.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for the help. Hopefully the pictures work its the first time placing them in a forum. |

My personal recommendation is to go with the ribbon strips, and just don't light up that corner. Putting ribbon strips under the lip that appears at the bottom of the handrail would look wicked, even with a small gap in the corner. There's no where to really hide anything in that corner anyway, and a hidden light source is always the sexiest.

I would do under the whole lip, you may find that you don't need any more light in that corner.
You can always add a simple and subtle up light in the corner later. EDIT: A simple corner table such as:
(Cut the legs so that it fits the different height stairs) It would give you a nice place to put the vase AND a nice thing to hide some lights under. |

I second the idea of sticking with ribbon strips all around . There doesn't seem to be any obvious way to mount that will give you a good field of light without being able to directly see the LED ribbon itself . I'm assuming you were thinking of attaching it to the side portion of the stairs directly underneath the lip, so the LEDs would splash out across the stairs . You could mount it under the lip facing down but the light would shine right down into the carpet and probably be a real disappointment . Plus if you're at the bottom of the stairs looking up you may be able to see the ribbon itself even if its mounted to the underside of the lip itself . Where were you thinking of mounting the spotlight if you installed one ? I don't see an obvious place to hide the housing itself .
As for which strips to use, I'd stick with the first link that you were looking at, the one that's in the 16ft roll . My reasoning is that since the LEDs will be so close to the surfaces that they're illuminating, there won't be sufficient space between the LED itself and the first bit of carpet it shines on to properly fill the gaps between the LEDs and provide one smooth line of light all the way up the stairs . Think about like if you have two LED spotlights and you're holding them a foot apart, shining down at the ground, and they're two inches off the ground, you'll see two distinct circles of bright light, one below each spotlight . If you were to raise them a couple feet off the ground, you wouldn't see two distinct circles of light anymore, but one even field of light . With the ribbon LED strips each LED is spaced .66 inches apart, while the Tri-Chip version uses a more powerful type of LED but spaces each LED 1.3 inches apart . So without being able to test it my inclination is to say choose the strip with denser LED spacing; even though the overall brightness is less, the visual effect may be more desirable and if in fact it turns out to be impossible to completely mask the LEDs from being viewed directly a LED with more subdued brightness will be less distracting . Anyway, just a few thoughts . If you pull the lever on this project make sure to post updates and PICTURES ! |

Thanks for all the great ideas guys. I think it would be a good idea to just to the ribbon led. Like you guys said there is no place to really hide the led flood lights. I also think it would be to bright with them. I also like the idea of the table corvettecrazy recommended. I liked what cooper had to say to about LED spacing since the surface I'm trying to light is so close. I will make sure to post some pictures of it when I finish the projects. So my shopping list right now is a roll of Ribbon LED Strips - 16 Foot Roll it only looks like it comes in warm white not neutral anymore? Then the Rotary Knob Dimmer. Do you guys think I need a junction box or just go straight to the power supply? Also what size power supply do you guys think I would need. My other idea is buying this outlet timer http://www.intermatic.com/products/timers/consu...rs/digital%20timers/dt620ch.aspx and having it come on at dusk and off at dawn. I'm open to any other ideas you guys would have. Thanks again.

Elaborating on what Cooper said, it should actually work very well to mount the strips horizontally under the lip, not straight down on the lip itself. You will probably see the lights that are above your eye level if you're near the bottom section of the stairs, but if you're okay with that, go for it.
I say get the ribbon strips, and then use only a little bit of tape or something to mount it in a few different ways and see what you like best. Absolute worst case scenario, you can return anything to Oznium for your moneyback. |

This specific product is being phased out and replaced with our newer, pre-wired, more aesthetically pleasing, black ribbon strip. Thus, limited colors available while supplies last.
Here's a link to the newer, prewired, more aesthetically pleasing black ribbon strip (also available in 16 foot roll): http://www.oznium.com/led-ribbon You don't necessarily need a junction box, but you may find it handy. A 3.25 amp power supply AC adapter would work well |
