Some interesting information that should be passed onto other forums, eMail groups, etc. The only way to fight something like this is to be informed of what's going on.

Quote:
The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 (PDF) gives the president the ability to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" and shut down or limit Internet traffic in any "critical" information network "in the interest of national security." The bill does not define a critical information network or a cybersecurity emergency. That definition would be left to the president.

The bill does not only add to the power of the president. It also grants the Secretary of Commerce "access to all relevant data concerning [critical] networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access." This means he or she can monitor or access any data on private or public networks without regard to privacy laws.

Read about it and so far the general consensus is that it won't pass because it is just too vague.

Now beyond that, the government does need to come up with a solution for this. This nation requires so heavily on the internet to function that if something were to happen, I do not believe that we have the infrastructure in place to support it. I think we'd all see one giant fail whale.

Hahaha... good freakin' luck with that! The internet was designed in such a way to continue to operate when segments fail or are shut down.

This won't shut down the entire internet (that's virtually impossible). Obama just wants to be able to control the US pipes in a time of crisis. It's not an invasion of privacy or anything crazy, it just means that all of our illegally downloading movies will be slower when our nation is under attack. icon_rolleyes.gif Either way, it'll fade away and never happen

Hasn't Clinton and Bush tried similar tactics already, only to never see them through? I think things like this are just trying to show certain people (morons) that you're doing something "beneficial" to USA.

^^^ Best freakout ever. Theres a sequel somewhere where the kids up in a tree saying that his brother fabricated the whole thing. Pretty entertaining.
