im curious as to what joomla actually is. i mean i understand its open source, but is it a complete site setup type of thing, or something you intergrate into a current layout? advantages? disadvantages?

http://www.joomla.org/about-joomla.html

It's a backend system, used for controlling content. Advantages and disadvantages depend on your needs.

I've worked with Joomla and Mambo (it's sister) a few times in the past -- I suggest you move along.

Joomla is a CMS. Wordpress is a blog.

If you want a CMS, I like Drupal, but I am curious to try some simpler ones like Frog CMS http://www.madebyfrog.com/

Wordpress does it great though, with a few tweaks. I wouldn't use anything else personally.

I have to second the drupal sucks comment....maybe not to that degree, but it does kinda suck. It's one of the better CMS out there, tho...there just aren't any high quality, free CMS.

Eh, I liked Drupal. I also tried Expression Engine (free), but it was impossible to get going in < 30 minutes. While Drupal doesn't have the best codebase, it is easy to use out of the box.
