Does 4 gauge wire work for a 1800 watt amp?

Id go with 2 awg min but tbh, id go with 0 awg. Another thing is, look at what gauge the amp will take, if it takes 4 gauge, 2 or 0 just isnt gonna fit.

It would probably work, chances are you aren't pushing the amp anywhere near 1800 watts anyway.

Is it 1800 RMS or 1800MAX? Two completely different things here which would help you a lot and help you figure it out with those sites that were provided for you.

That's not big of a deal,most people will simple use a distribution block which has larger gauge input connections and smaller gauge output connections. On my last system I had 1/0 from the battery to my distribution block and then just a very short run of 4 gauge to my amplifiers power input which was 4 gauge. Also if you don't want to use a distribution block,it's common to simply use a reducer.
