I would like to build the following circuit to dim my interior LEDs when the headlights are on, but I don't know what type of potentiometer to use.

What are the specs on the LED you are using? How much control do you want on the brightness? How easily do you need to be able to adjust it (twist a knob or uses a screwdriver to adjust?)

Selection will also depend on what value of R you choose... you can get pots that have a very wide range of adjustment, or some that only go a few hundred ohms. It all depends on the application - and what you want it to do.

I would start by determining about what resistance you want for the "dim" mode, then pick your pot based on that.

Why not use this simple PWM circuit LED dimmer? $16.99 http://www.oznium.com/rotary-dimmer

Problem with a simple potentiometer is that it is dependent on the amperage load of your LEDs.

Btw, the dimmer above is ground switched.
