Audi of America has now officially thrown its hat into the all-electric vehicle arena by announcing its decision to produce its slick two-seater EV concept known as the e-tron. The futuristic sports car is expected to hit streets in early 2012.

The new e-tron utilizes four electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack with 313 hp and an insane 3,319 lb-ft of torque. Its 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds acceleration puts many gasoline-powered sports cars on the road today to shame. To reduce the weight of the car, Audi has incorporated a space frame for the main structural body as well as fiber-reinforced plastic added-on body parts such as doors and the roof.

With a range of 154 miles on a single charge, and the well known quality of the Audi brand, the-etron has a significant leg up over some its other EV competitors in its class *cough* Tesla, but it remains to be seen how much of a demand there will be for these ultra stylish and ultra expensive EVs of the future. For the full ridiculously long details regarding the e-tron, jump to the press release here.

The Good: An all-electric sports car that rivals many gasoline powered contemporaries.

The Bad: Limited production is expected with price points out of reach for most.

The Bottom-Line: Another slick all-electric sports car that has the look and performance one would expect from Audi.

It totally defeats the purpose to have an electric car that most people can't afford.

^^^
It takes me a day and a half to hit 150 miles.

But, that's pretty far for an EV. The Chevy Volt only goes about 40 miles (I think) per charge. I couldn't even make it to work with that range.

I look forward to the future with nuclear power or fusion plants so that all these electric vehicles won't kill the power grid.... sleeping.gif

If I go to the nearest big city to get stuff from the mall or something (64 miles one way) Then yes. So that would be a STRAIGHT shot there, and a straight shot back. Hopeing there isnt roadwork.

Yes, actually, you WOULD make it to work on that range. The Chevy Volt has UNLIMITED range (aside from adding fuel). You think Chevy would just let you run out of battery power? No. The car has a small gas engine to recharge the HV battery pack just like any other series hybrid out there, so you won't have to worry about being stranded with no juice.

This car, as it sounds, doesn't have a re-charge ability, but lets look at two things here, seriously.
1. 154 miles per charge is class leading. The Tesla doesn't have a gas engine, either, and doesn't come close to the 154 miles mark. That's really good.
2. People who own this car AREN'T going to have it as their only car. If you can afford this car, you can afford a gasoline car for long trips. Hell, it probably can't even haul things like golf clubs and stuff... bottom line is it's a "toy" for city driving.

Double post.. I know.. but I need to rant on this.

First off, our power grid is perfectly capable of recharging our electric vehicles. You know, your refrigerator takes more wattage than recharging the Volt? Well you do now. Plus, when is peak consumption time? Evenings. That also means electricity is more expensive during evenings. So thus, when would people plug their cars in? Right before bed. Electricity demand is low over-night, so there would be absolutely no worries about putting extra strain on the grid between 9PM and 6AM.

Thinking the generation of EVehicles is going to cripple our infrastructure is silly.

The government wants everything to be solar and wind power. With all the incentives and the cap and trade bill you can not argue that. Now, when are wind and solar production at almost zero? 2100-0600.

A future in EV and solar/wind power aren't compatable. The solution in nuclear.

If I could edit I would. The volt pulls 15A for 6hrs. That's 1.65kW. When running continuously my fridge pulls 3.5A. That's 0.385kW. The Volt recharging pulls over 4 times the power of my fridge.

One must remember that when Cali is having rolling brown outs, the system is not capable of supporting the load being put on it already. Add a large increase of electric cars being charged and suddenly Cali the hopefully green capital of the world will go black all over.... and they're just one of the various states that'd have issues.
