Well gents, heading to the Navy recruitment office tomorrow morning.

I don't make the weight requirements, but after talking to the officer, we're gonna measure the circumference of my neck and waist, and he said "well work with ya".

Any sailors here?

If navy doesn't work out, AF & Coast Guard are also in question.

Also, broke my 100lb mark on the weightloss...icon_biggrin.gif

It was my 3rd time @ MEPS before I dropped enough weight for the USCG.

The Coast Guard is the most strict with weight requirements. Originally I was wanting to join the NAVY. My brother is a Senior Chief in the Navy and he told me "Do not join this **** service".

He directed me towards the Coast Guard and I'm glad he did. The USCG has like 33,000 sailors as opposed to 300,000. Those stats are what pushed me over to that side of the fence. Even though I was honorably discharged after 5 months it was pretty damn cool while I was there.

A really good friend of mine is in the AF, and he loves it to death. He has made it to some special ops something or other that he can't shed much light on but I plan on getting him drunk and digging for some secrets.

Goodluck dude. Although I did enjoy the millitary life, civilian life is hard to beat.

I have heard nothing but great things about the NAVY. I am also hearing the waiting list for deployment to boot camp is almost 2 years for the USCG.

Although I have a great amount of respect for all individuals in the army and marines, things are going to have to get really bad before I consider those two options.

I'm ex Navy, but a lot has changed since I got out. It's a good start if you're looking to learn a trade and possibly travel, but as far as pay goes it sucks. The Navy... or any service... is what you make of it. There's a ton of opportunity as far as education goes as well as advancement within the Navy itself.

It has it's good days and it's bad days. Some days, we only worked a few hours and went home, or sat around all day playing cards or doing stupid ****. Then other days we were working our asses off. I was in aviation and worked the flight deck so I had my hands full quite a bit while out at sea, but back on shore it was a cakewalk... like a regular job.

I have heard the Navy is absolute crap to go in to. Maybe that was just the long long days and months of being on a ship stuffed to the brim with other men biglaugh.gif

It's not *** if you're underway... heard 'em all, lol.

Sick, lemme know what's you're looking for answer-wise, should be able to help you out. I'm not sure about non-aviation rates, but right now we're pretty packed-up. Pretty sure it's due to the economy and peeps not wanting to get out right now, and I don't blame them - it just makes advancement a smidge harder. Also, lemme know what rate choices they throw at ya at Meps and the recruiters, I'll letcha know which to avoid, heh.
In all honesty, it's not that bad. As Ninja said, it is what you make of it. Peoples' opinions will vary greatly based on their attitude about things, their work ethic (if you're a ****, you'll be treated as such and have a miserable time until you straighten the **** up), etc. However, a substantial piece is also the command/squadron/unit, etc they're attached to and their leadership.
The typical warnings about Meps and recruiters apply - don't believe what they tell you. I'm not saying that they're full of crap, but don't forget they're trying to recruit. Also, get any promises or guarantees in writing and make sure they make it into your contract. And don't take the bonus unless it's more than $10k, otherwise it's just not that worth it. Also be aware that the bonus WILL be taxed 25%, but you'll get that back on your tax return later.

I don't want to write a book here for you to wade through, so just lemme know what kind of questions you've got an I'll answer them to the best of my abilities. Plenty of time out here in SWA (southwest asia), heh.

Likewise, I can give you insight into the AF side of things if the NAVY doesn't work out for ya. The Air Force isn't ALL sunshine and rainbows (as the other branches will have you believe).

Lies. 24-hr DFAC, gorgeous medical staff women (spent 8 days in your fine facility here good sir), busses to drive you around base, entire buildings devoted to movies, video games, pool tables, no 28-days on aircraft, pfffft. And all the sun you could possibly want...

My dad is currently on his 36th year of Naval service, and loves it. There will always be that 10% that simply can't cut it in any branch and therefore feel the need to criticize their respective branch. It really, truely is "what you make it." Oh... you might consider the Army or Marines too. I just re-enlisted with a fat $90,000 bonus. icon_wink.gif

Out in the deed bro, been here for 3.5 months, heh. Dunno if/when you've been here though. The BPC facility has a ton of stuff in it, including an indoor digital driving range thingy. They shut down the old tv/movie room, moved it to a different room with tons of recliners and whatnot. Then there's the other room with PS3's and 360's and all that stuff. Flat panels everywhere, heh.

Bobby - stay safe bud, I've had the unfortunate experience of carrying four of my friends off C130's drapped in flags. Never met ya, but you're still a brother through military service. Same with you banned.

Sick - good luck with whatever you decide to bro, let us know if we can help you out.

You know when? I may be back out here before too long again... would be cool to meet up. Definitely not the MWR tent, it's all in the BPC main building with the BX and all that jazz.
Personally I prefer the galley in Ops Town for breakfast around 23-2400... the guys on the grills don't even take my order I eat there so much, they just see me in line and by the time I get there my food's ready, heh.
Also, found out last night that y'all's security frowns on drifting around the round-about just outside the CC compound - the one out the gate and to the right. I thought it was pretty impressive sliding the F250 crew cab long-bed that we use as our work-truck, lol. Got three full revolutions before I got pulled. They confiscated the video camera too unfortunately, sigh. Not for the drift video though - they said that it was because we had clips of the B-1's taking off at night. Pfffff.

B1's are loud as ****. Yeah, I have a general idea of when I'll be there but OPSEC prevents me from giving this information. I've only stayed in the transient tents while I was there. The BX is nicer there than it is on my base

I'm glad we're leaving in November, as we too should be staying in the transient t's. Didn't envy the crew we relieved out here, they had to stay a week in them in the middle of July. Mite-bit toasty, heh.

I hear you on OPSEC.. the commercials on AFN have more than beaten that point to oblivion.
