I have a couple of questions about shaving or trimming a LED.
1. What tools do I need to shave the tip of a led down? 2. Does it scatter out the beam if I shave the end of led down? |

1. Sandpaper
2. Yes, it will scatter the beam out more if you shave the LED down. |

Could I use a dremel or is sandpaper by hand better. Thanks for the reply A-Ray.

dremel will be faster, but be careful that you don't sand down to far. Its not like using sandpaper takes a long time anyways

If its a variable speed, use a lower speed so that you don't sand down too much and/or melt the plastic part of the LED .
You'll still end up with one 'hot spot' at the center of the LED but other than that it will cast a wider softer field of light rather than the tight spotlight/beam effect of the unsanded LED . Also, the superflux LEDs, as well as being brighter, broadcast a wider field of light than a standard 5mm or 3mm LED . |

Good info. guys.
I like to use the Dremel with a cut off wheel to sand mine down and then finish them up with a fine grit emery board. |

I have a belt sander ... several touches and the tips gone ... I use a small butane torch and fan it over the rough tips and it melts/smoothes it like glass ...
