I am thinking of changing over from my 55w fog lights on my Goldwing to the 10 watt Luxeon LEDs which are SUPER bright.
They say that you need a heat sink but wouldn't the old attachment for the 55w bulb be enough of a heat sink to dissipate the heat?
I also read somewhere that it only takes 6.6 vdc to run one so I have to combine the two before going to power but I also have seen one article talking about drivers for these. Don't they just work off the voltage like the regular LED's?
This would help significantly to reduce the power consumption being used by the standard alternator.

A few things...

They are not going to be bright enough to replace your fog lights if you want them to have a usable output.

The old attachment for the bulb won't be enough. Those puppies are going to make a TON of heat.

Higher power LED's are much more sensitive to what their input is. You should current regulate them for best performance and longevity. This is where the driver comes in.

Darn!
I have seen some sites where people have made unbelievable spotlights & flashlights out of these 10-watt stars. It is amazing the technology that has come up with these LEDs in the last 10 years; it's fantastic.
I just found another site that talks more in depth about the drivers. They regulate the current & not the voltage that is being distributed to the LEDs.
I've been doing all kinds of research since my posting and this is quite interesting. They have even designed a LED configeration that replaces the HID lights for large open spaces.
This is where I have been learning for the last hour http://www.luxeonstar.com/
