Hello all,
So me and my brother are helping setup a play prop for my brothers highschool play, and he needs a red glow out of a bowl to resemble a red firework glow. So my idea was to use 2 of my red 12 inch cathode tubes and use a small wiring setup in the bottom of the bowl. it will be attached to a switch so that when the actor reaches into the bowl to "Light the firecracker" he can flip the switch and turn on the red lights. The lights only have to be on for 1 minute at the most because it will be at the end of a scene, My problem is that I am having troubles finding a power source since it cant be plugged into a wall and has to be small enough to fit into a bowl. I was thinking about using two 9 volt batteries but since the cathodes run off of 12 volts i dont want to worry about burning out the transformer. Any ideas on what else I can use. I think I have 4 red LEDS that I could use also but im worried that they wont put out enough light. Thanks! |

AA batteries are 1.5 volts iif I'm correct so I should use 8 batteries. Perhaps I can place mirriors in the bowl to help "throw" the light out of the bowl?

LED's are directional so I see no need for any mirrors.
I would just put 5 of http://www.oznium.com/four-chip-led in series with a 9v battery and call it a day. |

Depending how much light and how large the bowl is you could run 10 or 15 of the four chip led's.
Just run 2 or 3 strings of LED's in parallel and put that in series with the battery. |

I second the LED & AA battery idea, although my choices would be http://www.oznium.com/silicone-encased-led-strip for the lights and http://www.oznium.com/12v-led-battery-holder for the battery pack . The reason I'd go with an LED strip, and those in particular, is because they're broader and would lay flat easily on the bottom of the bowl; they're also very bright .

Or Refer to this topic, as its pretty much the same thing your doing. Power wise. Just you know...subtract the head and add a bowl.
