My cousin has a 1998 Grand Am GT and his back two speakers are blown (Probably from improper use, hehe). Well, anyway, the speakers are screwed from the top-down so the points are inside of the trunk. Then the ****ers who built the car put the carpet over the entire thing inside the car so that there's no way I can take the screws off of the speakers. Now, what the heck am I supposed to do to get the speakers out? I can't even find an edge of the carpet to pull, and I'm afraid to if I finally do because I don't want to ruin it all. Can somebody give me an idea? Thanks!

LOL. I HAVE THAT SAME EXACT CAR!! wow..

Anyway

What you do is take out the backseat. The whole thing. Then you have to take out the back panel that's over the speakers. Only way it comes off is with the backseat out. Then you can replace the speakers. I had to do this when I installed my 6x9s.

Below the seat, near the bottom, in the middle is a bolt. You have to unscrew that first. Then you can just pull it out I think, and everything else just comes out pretty easily I think. If your pulling any trim pieces off, if you have to, be carefull, they are fragile and my dad cut his finger on one, it was sharp.

So:

1) I have to take one bolt off the underside of the seat near the middle?
2) The whole seat slides off?
3).........
4)......
5) Find some molding and pull it off?

Sorry, I'm a bit confused about how to do this. It seems like a MAJOR pain in the butt to do, and since it's not my car, I'm not familiar on where things are in the back seat.

Thanks for your help though!

1) remove bolt... pull hard. If it doesn't budge:
2) look for more bolts (think symmetrically too)... remove and pull hard again
3) Repeat step 2 as needed

Is the paneling necessary to take off so I can get the carpet out? I guess, I'm just not sure what exactly it is that holds the carpet down, so I'm not sure how much I need to take out of the car so I can get the carpet up.

Thanks.

You don't need to get the carpet up...just that panel under the back window.

Whooooooo boy! Now I'm really confused. I guess I don't know what I need to do now. So the Speaker isn't covered by the carpet? What is it covered by? What do I need to remove so I can get to it? I'm COMPLETELY lost now!

I'm sorry if I'm being difficult...........I just don't want to screw up my cousin's car...

I'll get some pics tomarrow, maybe, of what I'm talking about.

But the thing under the rear window...it's carpeted, yes, but it's like a plastic panel or something. You need to take that off first. Then you can get to the screws that hold in the speakers. Take the seats out, look for hidden bolts, and you'll do fine. You won't screw anything up.

Woot! Thanks a ton. And don't worry about getting those pictures. I'm going with my cousin about 8 am to go get some speakers and replace them. I need to be to work shortly afterwards, and so I won't have any other time except in the morning to do them. Thanks for the info though. I will definately give that a shot and hope to GOD that it will work!

the best way to get advice on pulling things out is step by step...

first take that under-seat bolt out and see if the whole seat comes out, if not, inspect for more until the seat does come out...

then, LOOK AROUND... try to get an understanding of what you're looking at and where you want to be, you should find that panel sickness is talking about...

i highly doubt you'll ever overcome the confusion without seeing it for yourself (or sickness' pics) icon_cool.gif

****. I will definately say, that was the hardest thing I've ever done (which probably isn't too hard for you, but for me, I've done next-to-NO work on cars, so it was a ton of work for me.) The only other car audio stuff I've done is installing 2 subs, and replacing a speaker in my door.

So anyway, the whole process took me roughly 7 hours to complete. I'm sorry if that's a little slow, but it was a lot of stuff we had to do. This is what we did:

1) Went to our salvage yard and found a car that we could get access to (yes, I know, we could have bought better speakers, but my cousin has no money, and he didn't care if it was just stock.)
2) Finally figured out how to get enough force on the stuff to just break it and get the carpet/plastic to come out (the car was already missing the molding.)
3) We got the speakers out and went home.
4) We took out the two bolts underneath his seat.
5) We yanked on the back of the seat hard until the 3 clips behind it were free of the metal sheet they were clipped in.
6) We then spent forever trying to figure out how to get all the paneling out of his car so that we could get the back dash piece out.
7) Finally figured out that we had to remove the molding around the door (it a 2-door) so that we could pull the molding in the backseat away from the dash.
icon_cool.gif Realized we needed a socket that would fit in the seatbelt so we could pull that out to finish removing the paneling.
9) Got the socket.
10) Got the paneling away finally.
11) Realized that we needed to do the other side as well so the back plactic piece would slide out.
12) Did that.
13) Realized that the back plastic piece was jammed in between the windows and the back dash, and it would not budge for any reason.
14) Resorted to crawing in the trunk and turning upside-down so we could get to the speakers if we held up the carpet/plastic and got the wrench underneath of it.
15) Pulled out the blown speakers.
16) Put in the new speakers.
17) Put the carpet/plastic back in place.
1icon_cool.gif Put the back side paneling in.
19) Put the front paneling in.
20) Realized we couldn't put the seat back in because of the 3 clips.
21) Realized there were two bolts on the underneath of the back of the back-seat.
22) Took those bolts out.
23) Slid the back of the seat into place.
24) Replace the bolts
25) Slid the bottom of the backseat into place.
26) Replaced those bolts.
27) Sat on the couch and tried not to pass out since we just worked for 7 hours in about 90 degree weather.

And.......um...........yeah. It was a HUGE process that I do NOT want to repeat!

Well sounds like a lot of work... i thought it was funny that your two 8's turned into smiley faces... and also if you don't want to do that again then tell him not to blow his speakers again. icon_wink.gif

Actually, HE didn't blow the speakers. He bought the car used from a dealership. The speakers were blown, but the internal wire that must have ripped wasn't off completely because the speakers worked every once in awhile, and they happened to work when he test-drove the car, so he had no idea that they were blown.

*sigh*

damn i just got to do that today, my dash speakers basically get dry rotted from being cooked by the sun, the glue that holds the surround to the cone (i guess thats what its called im not up on speaker terms) gets yellow and brittle and just separates from the rubber, i've got the infinity 4x6 plate speakers, they're good except for when exposed to the sun, heat, and cold for about a year.

Have fun 88olds. It's a hella project to do. Granted I'm not the smartest in the world when it comes to doing all the audio stuff, I know how much work goes into doing it, and it's a pain in the butt!

Find someone to help you do it. It makes it a little bit more enjoyable and not as long of a project. I would tell you to turn on your radio while you do it, but you can't since you're replacing the speakers. Nevermind icon_lol.gif .
