I just got pulled over for my green neons, She was like sir you can light up the world at a car show, but you cannot drive with them on. "It's a $73 ticket, I don't think you want to pay that much to look cool" The bad part about it was I asked a cop about 2 weeks ago and he said it was fine as long as it wasnt red or blue. Also, I was 2 houses away from my house when it happened... Sucks... Oh well..

Did they give you the ticket?

I don't know the local statutes for Brandon, however I was pulled over in Largo (pinellas county) for a similar reason. The cop told me that my purple neon was illegal. I was shocked that an officer of the law was telling me this, cause I had a printed copy of the local laws and statutes in my glove compartment, which simply stated that they were not illegal. I calmly and politely explained this to the officer and after a little debate, he simply said "well, just turn them off for now" and let me go.

I hate to say it, but I've noticed that alot of the local law enforcement (in my area atleast) don't really know what the law actually says, just what they *think* it says.

Of course, with everybody and their brother putting neon on their cars down here now & street racing getting a more stern eye turned towards it, they could have changed the laws. By no means, ever argue with an officer... however, my advice would be to find out for yourself in writing what is and is not legal in your area. Make a copy of it and keep it with you in your car, this way you have something to politely show the officer in case you need to.

yes. politeness usually goes a long way.

back in my hometown, however, i was warned to remove my white nozzle leds, not because they are illegal, but because they are "annoying".

i asked him about the numerous (trying to avoid the phrase...) hick-trucks runnin round there with the auxiliary amber lighting, etc... he said "i dont make the laws, i just enforce them". hmm. makes no sense.

a lil more icing, believe i already posted this: a friend had around a grand of stereo stuff stolen from his car. cop asks "what are you doin parking here" he responds, "i was staying at a friends". cop: "well, you shoulndta parked there" him: "where the hell am i supposed to park???" cop: "not in this town..."

A basic human right is "certainty of law" meaning that everyone is entitled to be clear about the laws that apply to them. This must form part of your constitution somewhere... after all, without such a clause, any governement can dream up an arbitrary law and hit citizens with it out of the blue.

I need to go and find the laws again myself and get another copy of them. Besides the fact that they might have changed them recently, I lost my original set after one of my stupid, drunk friends broke my glove compartment when I was taking him home one night icon_rolleyes.gif .

Also, justinwebb... there are usually laws about what color your license plate can be illuminated with. Since neon license plate frames "illuminate" your license plate, they fall into this law and because of which can be considered illegal depending on your local laws. Just for you Florida people, it is illegal to have you license plate illuminated by anything other than a white light.

And, yes... Adrian, any citizen can obtain a copy of their local or federal laws and statutes, however they are usually written in "legal-ese" and they don't making finding a specific law very easy icon_wink.gif so, it takes a bit of looking... haha.
