Wiring 4 LED's W/ load Resistors

I am wiring 4 LED's with the Load resistore Cause it is being power by 3 AA batteries. I was looking at the how to diagram of what I am doing except the only thing that I don't get is "Where does the ground go back to complete the circuit??

the ground goes back to the negative of the battery.

the ground will go to the negative side of the battery. tho i dont get what youre doing because i believe if you use 2 AA batts you may not need a resistor at all.
