does anybody else have the problem of parents bein' strange about tinkerin' with the ride? you should have seen how my dad flipped when he saw my 2 12's, me made me take them out... it was like i'd been out smokin weed and makin babies icon_sad.gif icon_sad.gif icon_sad.gif he said if an ambulance comes i wont hear it and ill kill somebody... but how often do we actually hear those sirens?

the rule is, if it cant be undone to the car i can't do it... or if it "draws attention to me". thats not what im after to begin with, i just want my car to feel like my own and to have unique qualities... i think thats what a lot of us do it for. it gives me a sense of accomplishment, that i came up with this or that idea, i mounted this, i installed/painted/WHATEVER that... anybody empathize with me?

Who pays for your car? If you pay/bought it, its yours to modify.

Safety is the only reason that my parents my say something to me. icon_cool.gif

I get lectures about my car....but as long as its my money going into the car, she doesnt care.....Other parents give me the thumbs up, my mom is not into customizing cars, her hobby is horses.....So I give her guff about spending too much money to own horses and she gives me guff about putting stuff on my car....

I wonder what shes going to say when I pick up a lightning later on this year or early next icon_redface.gif

My parents tell me that I'm setting my car up to get stolen again (yes, it was stolen before... three days after I got it!). And how lowering a car is low-class and looks low-class, and how all the cars that are lowered look terrible and blah blah. I just tell them that the cars that look bad are DONE incorrectly.. half the cars they see are lowered, but done tastefully and properly so they can't tell. They think I'm turning my car into a ghetto-Box... which provides the drive and motivation to finish the projects in the cleanest and most professional way possible to prove them wrong icon_twisted.gif

With the Bug, they were all for my restoring and improving it (since it was toast when I got it..), swapping for disc brakes, etc... mostly because the stuff I was doing made it safer. I neglected to mention to them that while I was rebuilding the engine I was going to make it scream icon_biggrin.gif
The first time I took my stepdad out for a ride in it we were sitting at a traffic light and these two guys pulled up in a Z28 with some exhaust work and revved at us. The light turned green and I just floored it and ended up about 3 Bug-lengths ahead at the end of it all. At the next light Ross looked over at me and said "Restored to original condition huh?" biglaugh.gif

My parents really don't want me modifying the car much. As of right now they own it. (hopefully that will change this summer) They are letting me do the exhaust on it because right now it has a hole it in and it sounds like a frickin wasp. I'm putting LEDs in the cupholder and they won't know about it until after its done. With any modified vehicle my mom calls it "redneck". I beg to differ. My dad likes some modified cars, but doesn't let on that he likes them too much. They won't care about switching factoy speakers and head unit. Dunno about subs though. They also don't want me putting too much money into the car. "Its not worth much money" I say make it worth money. Its all in the eyes of the owner though. If its their only means of transportation, its worth a million bucks.

I bought my car and my parents are thrilled that i have a hobbie (cars), but ... even if it is your car you still should listen to your parents if your living with them and not paying rent. They are still your parents after all.... you just have to convence them to let you make some mods... maybe not all the ones you want, but some. For example ... ask your dad if he ever worked on his car when he was young... if he ever did any mod to make his car "cool". Let them know you will pay for all mods and will take responsibility for them. I made the rule for myself that anything i put in will be removable so it works for me... i like my mods. You can also make a small sub sound loud... if your parents see that its small they might let you have one and just get spkrman to design a box so it will BOOM. I hope everything works out. icon_wink.gif

I personally would listen to your parents...They will be the ones that can (might not, but can) bail you out if you need it...My mom hates subs and I put one in my car she saw it and i said it was a friends...My mom has actually offered to buy me another battery for all of my lights and stuff...She loves the lights but hates the booming music...If they paid for the car and are still paying for the car I would listen to them and make sure it is ok for you to do stuff to (at the time) their car...cause they could say we are selling it tomorrow and all your hard work is gone...I would just listen to them until the car is yours...

we have a george foreman... hmm icon_twisted.gif

with my parents they're just concerned that ill do stuff that WONT or CANT be undone and it will drop the value. and yes, they pay for it (i BARELY could.. if i did, it would probably come close to suckin' me dry as far as money goes and im tryin to save up for college a bit), so that puts me at a disadvantage. I put my subs in and didnt tell my dad.. might actually be sellin' them o_O i dont know yet.

thing i dont understand is i plan to have this car for 6+ more years, so it wont really be worth anything when i DO sell it so what the big freakin deal...

glad to see im not the only one w/ this problem. to those of you that dont experience this... relish it, enough for all of us.

My dad helps me with the car and even gives me ideas sometimes. The only thing he wasn't too sure about was the train horn, but he still helped me install it and after he drove my car with it one day, he mentioned how great it was on the road. icon_lol.gif
My mom on the other hand, she thinks it's stupid and will always give me the talk on how I spend so much time on my car and not important things. icon_rolleyes.gif

My dad hates anything I do to my car, he always tells me I will ruin my car and that I do not have enough experience to work on a vehicle. Funny thing is when their is a major project (water pump would be an example) on my car he takes over. icon_confused.gif Stuff like that stopped though after we changed my intake elbow and now I will not let him even work on my car. Plus, I now have my check from my mom (had to almost steal the damn thing) so she cannot keep a prying eye on my expenses so now I'm free to mod without listening to the *****.

I haven't lived with my mom for over 11 years, so I don't have the "mom factor". I've been married for 10 years, so I have the "wife factor" instead. icon_lol.gif

Luckily, she's cool with most of the stuff I do to the cars. Even when she initially gives me dirty looks, after it's done, she likes it, or at least tolerates it. I do good work, and make the car look better after I'm done, or at least both of us think so.

I hope I don't turn into an "old fart" in 14 years, when my son starts driving. I'd like to work with him on doing stuff to his own car when he turns 16. I'm hoping to get him involved in working on my cars in a few years.

I think it's important that parents at least support what their kids are interested in, even if they don't like it themselves.

Ha, parents can suck like that. I was lucky enough to have pork as a brother. They ***** at him time an time again. (he moddified the hell out of a POS 93 cavalier, his first car)... But esp. for his truck which was just a "mexican POS"... But eventually they gave up yelling at him, and by the time I wanted to modify anything, they didnt care anymore. Worked out well for me biglaugh.gif

If its your car or not doesn't matter to much, I think its more, Their house Their Rules. You may have bought the car, but if they are super against it, you may be looking for an apartment, and thats no good. Just show them pictures of peoples cars on here, they will be happy all you are doing is some minor mods icon_twisted.gif Well, goodluck man.

I've got the GF factor instead biglaugh.gif

She complains about me wasting money on my car, yet I just put it bluntly to her one day and she hasn't bothered me since. My hobby, although expensive, is constructive. There are lots of hobbies that are destructive (drugs, alcohol) or non-constructive (video games) or just entertaining (adultery) that many people have. If she wants I can certainly change hobbies icon_twisted.gif biglaugh.gif

I got a lil' flack about the wheels and anything engine-related, but my dad was gung-ho about putting lights on it. The factory stereo was FUBAR'd, so I had no problem getting an OK for that.

Pretty much tho, after a year of owning the car, I no longer asked permission to mod it. I just did it and they would notice things about a month or so later (well, except with the UB kit... I showed them that). 9 times outta 10 they don't really care... but I did get some lip service about the sub install and like I said the 17's...

My Mom bought the house we live in specifically because it has a garage where I can wrench on my car. My parents are awesome. They know, that even if they discouraged it, I'd go somewhere else and work on stuff.
