My dad has a 99 miata, and on the way home today his engine randomly cuts out when the gas pedal is pressed. The rpms cut down to about 500, then kick back up to normal. Im thinking maybe fuel pump, filter and maybe sparkplug wires. Anyone know what this problem is? (its a 5 speed manual)

sounds like a fuel/air problem. check the fuel pump and filter and the air filter.
Also check the plugs and sensors.

do you have a multimeter and some pins? start measuring your voltages across you TPS proper range is .4-4.7 ISH,,,, but if there is a bad "spot" then all goes to hell, come to think of it, an old school analog meter would be best for that particular test, or of course an oscilliscope..
..... and definitely make sure your maintenance up to date! always a good idea.

you can replace the sensors yourself..its plug and play while the engine is cold. I learned how to do it and saves alot of money

I would think that getting to anything on a Miata would be a pain.
