how big of a difference does name brand make? cause i see a coustic amp that says 300w x 2 ch for 300 and somethin dollars but then i can get a legacy that says 800w x 2 ch for like 150dollars. how would these two amps compare when pushin like 2 12s?

alot of times you have to go by the reputation of the company. ive heard coustics and like them ive never heard legacy thought. one thing to remember is you get what you pay for. also one thing to think about is which company has poored more money into research and developement and product testing.

Well think of those Rockwood 6x9s that handle 300 watts. $20 bucs.

Rockford 3 way 6x9s 125 watt. $120 bucs

You get what you pay for.

i have competed with my sound system for 10 years in IASCA and other sound competitions, so take my word when i tell you this.....

when buying an amplifier for subs, always buy American made amplifiers, don't buy amps made in china, japan, malaysia and other countries.

i am not saying this cause i am a patriot, (actually i am Canadian) i am saying this cause it has been proven time and time again, the cleanest bass and the most bang, and the ability to bridge and lower the impedance of the subs is best performed by American made amps.

Some examples of American made amps, Soundstream, Rockford Fosgate, MTX, HiFonics etc.

The American made amps are more pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for.

I personally have Soundstream Reference 500s in my car (4 of them), they cost me close to $1500 each at the time, I have had them for 10 years now, and only 1 amp has had 1 problem (which was fixed for $200), other than that, no problems after 10 years of heavy heavy pounding and sound competitions.

Often the sheer weight of an amp says something about how it's built. For instance weigh a JL amp and then weigh a Legacy thats rated 5oo watts higher...i bet the JL is still heftier.
