im wanting to take the spoiler off my car and use the existing holes to wire up a 3rd brake light, im planning on using somthing like a 90 degree pvc connectort to com out of the holes or somthing like that, should i use 3 5mm red leds grouped in a triangular configuration or should i use just 1 10mm?

agreed, Use superflux led's.

Although the whole concept of 90deg connectors sticking out of a spoiler sounds kind of ugly.

Although, I never posted here, I think I can help here. I would have to answer the op's question with a "yes".
I have completey swaped every old incandecent light in the interior of my 2002 Corvette to blue LED's. and spent much of this fall/winter tinkering with LED's for my son's future Impreza LED swap. In my experience and without getting too technical the light output from 3-5mm LEDs would outshine a single 10mm. Even if both types were flat-top/wide angle lens'.
Viewing angle would play a part as well. The dome lens on the 10mm LED acts as a spotlight lens and limits the light to a narrow cone which would only work if viewed from directly in line with it's mounting plane. HTH
