LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, the light is produced using a semiconductor in a process called electroluminescence. LED lighting is a far more efficient and economical lighting solution than incandescent lights.
The average lifespan of LED light is 50 000 hours, this is 50 times longer than an incandescent bulb! They can probably last you upwards of 11 years, and it goes without saying that the less you use it, the longer it will last.
Not all LEDs are created equal, so we can’t expect them to all be dimmable. When buying LEDs, it’s a good idea to first ensure that the LED is dimmable and then also check which types of dimmers work with the LEDs you’d like to use.
The first LED lights created a murkier effect which meant that they ended up changing the color of a room or surface. This happened because of a diode that produced light which excluded sections of the light spectrum.
If you want to know how well colors will be represented under your LED lights, simply check the Color Rendering Index or CRI of your chosen LED. The higher the CRI, the better and more accurate the color rendering of your light will be.
The Color Rendering Index or CRI is the measurement of how well a light renders a color that it falls on, so they higher this number, the more accurate the color will appear under this light. Most LED lights for homes will be around 80 CRI.
While it’s true that the first white LED lights had a blue tint to them, this may no longer be the case as LED technology has improved greatly throughout the years. The shade of a light is measured in Kelvins or K, with lower Kelvins producing a softer, warmer light, and higher Kelvins producing a brighter cool white light. This is great news for anyone wanting a specific shade of white LED light.
